More on HA 370

Based on student responses to an e-mail survey, HA 370 will be rescheduled to MW 4-5:30. This will put the first class meeting at 4:00 on Wednesday January 8 at 4:00. The class will meet in 2324 Haley. Its class code is 6151. All students who were registered for the original time slot have been shifted onto the new roll, so no one needs to re-register.

The class will be taught by Mr. Leland Holman, a 1988 graduate of the HA Program, who received his M.P.A. degree from Auburn University in Montgomery with a concentration in Health Administration in 1995. He is also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Mr. Holman is Executive Director of the Alabma Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Prior to his current position, he worked for 7 years in the Alabama Department of Public Health. He is an active member of the HA Alumni Organization, is a member of its Executive Council, and serves as Chair of the HA Advisory Council.

If you are an HA student with a time conflict with the scheduled course offering that cannot be resolved, and especially if you will not be able to take the class when it comes around again in Winter of 1998, please e-mail Dr. Burns so that efforts can be made to find an appropriate solution for you.

Change in HA 370 Offering

Word was just received yesterday that Dr. Doris Ford will not be able to teach HA370, Health Administration and Community, Winter 1997 as previously scheduled. Several options are being examined to deal with this situation to enable the course to be taught Winter quarter by another person.

If you are a student registered to take the course, please check your e-mail for more detailed information. Every effort will be made to see that the needs of everyone requiring the course are met appropriately.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Ford family.

Further Word on HA 361

It is now definite that HA 361 (Legal Aspects) will not be offered Spring 1997. Instead, it will be offered during Summer 1997.

Important Scheduling Changes

As students plan their Winter and Spring quarters, they should take note of the following scheduling items:
  1. Dr. Ford's Seminar in Long-Term Care (HA 532) has been moved to Spring Quarter. Students who need the course to graduate but who cannot take it Spring should contact Dr. Burns. Dr. Ford will teach her HA 370 Epidemiology course Winter 1997 as scheduled.
  2. It is possible that HA 361 Legal Aspects will be moved from Spring 1997 to Summer 1997. The final status of this course will be posted to the Newsline as soon as possible. However, the course will definitely be offered one of these two quarters.
  3. Students who are planning to intern Winter 1997 need to be starting the application process. See our internship checklist for details. Dr. Burns plans to meet collectively with the interns to brief them on internship basics and will be getting in touch with them soon about scheduling a meeting.

Opportunity for Minority Students

The Institute for Diversity in Health Management is offering its 1997 Summer Enrichment Program providing a paid internship at a health care organization. Minority students who are juniors or seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA and a strong record of community service and extracurricular activities are encournaged to apply.

Application forms can be obtained from Dr. Burns or by contacting the Institute directly at 800-233-0996 or 770-392-0996.

Advising Procedures for Fall

With Dr. Ford out on medical leave for fall quarter, Dr. Burns and HHAO officers Kiersten Adams and Lakeshia Dotson have collaborated on a series of steps designed to effectively cover junior/senior advising needs. (Freshman and sophomore students will see Dr. McEldowney as usual).

Dr. Burns reports:

My office hours for fall will be 9:30-11:30 and 2:30-3:00 TTh by appointment. To make an appointment, use one of the signup sheets on my office door, 7094 Haley. However, during Dr. Ford's medical leave, when I will be responsible for insuring advising availability for all our junior and senior HA students, the following additional procedures will be used for advising:

  1. HHAO officers Kiersten Adams and Lakeshia Dotson have graciously volunteered to serve as advising assistants helping with routine advising. Examples of "routine advising" for juniors and seniors would include:

    • Students considering transferring to HA and wanting to learn more about the Program.

    • Students wanting to learn more about particular courses or instructors.

    • Students wanting to begin planning out their course of study.

  2. If your advising needs fit any of these categories, please contact Kiersten or Lakeshia first:

  3. If you have a relatively simple matter to discuss but it does not fit one of the above categories, or if you cannot reach Kiersten or Lakeshia, try e-mailing me at burnsma@duc.auburn.edu. If we cannot resolve the matter by e-mail, then you'll need an appointment.

  4. If you wish to schedule an internship, keep in mind you can do so through the HA website.

  5. If you feel you do need an actual appointment, schedule it as early in the quarter as possible to avoid the end-of-quarter "crunch."

  6. If you cannot see me on my office hours, please contact me by e-mail or by leaving a note in my box in the Political Science office (7080 Haley Center) with your name and phone number on it.

New Resources for Internships

Two new items of interest to students who have not yet done their internships have been added to this Web site:
  • A list of some of the many internship sites which students have used in the past may help those trying to decide where they would like to do their own internship.
  • An internship check list lists specific steps students must take to arrange for and complete the internship process. Thanks to HHAO President Clabe Dobbs for suggesting this idea

News from a Recent Graduate

Derrick Jones, who graduated Spring this year, is doing a post-graduate summer internship at the Alabama Hospital Association in Montgomery this summer.

Derrick is still using the e-mail address jonesdv@mail.auburn.edu and writes:

I will be starting UAB' s Master of Science in Health Administration Program in September. I'd be happy to serve as a resource for any student interested in graduate study.

The email address that I submitted is only temporary I should have a new address by September. So far my Auburn education in Health Administration has been an asset. The hospital association is a great contact for anyone who is interested in going into the hospital field. Anyone that is interested in interning at AlaHa can contact me for more info.

Scheduling Change for Winter/Spring Quarters

Dr. McEldowney's Special Topics course in comparative health policy has been moved from Spring 1997 to Winter 1997. For further information on scheduling of HA classes, see our draft schedule.

July 19, 1996

Dr. Ford to Be on Leave Fall 1996

Dr. Doris Ford, who is still recovering from major back surgery this spring, will be on medical leave fall quarter. Her regular duties will be divided as follows:

HA 360 will be taught by Ms. Jane Sabes, a Ph.D. student in Public Administsration and Public Policy and former State Health Officer of the state of Wyoming. Students wishing to contact her by e-mail may do so at sabesja@mail.auburn.edu.

Dr. Burns will be handling internships and Dr. Ford's advising. This means all junior and senior HA's who need advising during the fall quarter should contact him. Because this will represent a very substantial advising load, students are urged to submit relatively simple advising questions by e-mail to Dr. Burns to maximize his in-person availability for more complex matters, such as multi-quarter schedule planning. Also, if you plan to see Dr. Burns in person during the fall, please plan on scheduling your appointment early in the quarter to avoid last-minute "end-of-quarter" overcrowding.

We look forward to having Dr. Ford back with us Winter quarter and wish her continued progress in her recovery.

Meet the HA Advisory Council

Central to efforts to keep the HA Program current and relevant to its graduates is the role of the HA Advisory Council. A new web page on the Council tells more about its functioning and lists information about the administrators who have graciously volunteered their time to advise us on how the Program can best serve the needs of our changing health care environment.

A Web Milestone

This afternoon, our HA home page reported its 2000th access since the installation of its counter less than one year ago, in August of 1995. That's not counting accesses from the date of the page's creation, in April of 1995, to the installation of the counter in August.

Important Library Survey!

If you've been concerned about those repeated journal cuts at the RDB Library, then you should be very concerned about a survey now being conducted by the library. It's an on-line quesionnaire which asks which serials/journals you find important for your work, and responese to it will be the basis of future journal cuts.

    What This Means for HA

If you know of HA-related journals that have proven valuable to you in doing research/study or in your general professional reading, please answer the survey before June 7 and "vote" for them--and encourage your fellow HA students to do so, too. This is one "election" that could directly affect the professional quality of our program, and the ability of you and future students to obtain adequate training for HA careers.

To access the survey, use the Web address

In order to participate in the survey, you have to fill out an on-line information form which asks, among other matters, your "academic department" In the case of HA, it probably would be best to answer this with "Health Administration/Political Science."

You can find many journals related to our field by looking under the subject category "R...Medicine". For any of importance to you that can't be found there, you can search directly under the title of the journal.

It's a very busy time of the quarter, but don't neglect this opportunity to let the library's periodicals review committee know what journals you find important to your classes and your career preparation.

Thanks!

New Graduate-Level HA Class

This Winter (Winter 1997), the Political Science Department plans to offer a 600-level Health Policy class, specifically, a five-credit-hour section, PO 680F (Special Topics in Public Policy). It will meet like a regular seminar class.

The instructor for the proposed will be Dr. Burns. What would the class involve? One concept is that it would be a general survey of the health policy field, as proposed in a concept Dr. Burns has set out on his personal web page for a "PO6xx" class. You can see a draft syllabus of this course through Dr. Burns's page, http://www.auburn.edu/~burnsma. Another possibility is that it would be a course looking at changes affecting the health policy environment, including such areas as general concepts of change and innovation, issues of multiculturalism/diversity, and health reform. Dr. Burns will take into account the needs of the students interested in the course in making final plans for content.

What is needed at present, however, is a count of students seriously interested in taking the class. If you are interested, please e-mail Dr. Burns at burnsma@duc.auburn.edu.

Students in the MPA program who are planning to do a track in Health Administration/Policy should plan to take this class. Advanced seniors in the HA Program may also take the course by special permission of the Graduate School; please e-mail Dr. Burns for details.

Stats and Facts

The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) has just released its 1996-1998 Health Services Education Directory of Programs. For the first time, Auburn's program is listed in the undergraduate section. Here are a few facts of interest:
  • The AU HA Program is one of only thirty-one undergraduate programs in the United States to be approved as an AUPHA member.
  • There are only nine such member programs in the Southeastern United States.
  • Although three other undergraduate programs have a presence on the Internet, all list contact only through e-mail. It would appear that our program is the first undergraduate HA Program in the United States to have a presence on the World Wide Web! In fact, not even any of the graduate programs in the Directory list a Web presence. - War (Cyber) Eagle! -
If you'd like to look over the Directory yourself, it's available in Dr. Burns's office, 7094 Haley.
