An HA Alumni Conference will be held February 22-24, with speakers, social events, and a celebration of the 35th Anniverary of the HA Program.
Interested alums and others can find more details in the Conference Brochure.
HA's student organization, the HHAO, will be meeting at 7 tonight in the Eagles Nest. Featured speaker will be Ms. Brenda Yost, the Director of Senior Services for East Alabama Medical speaker.
The process of re-certification of our Program began in Fall 2005 with the filing of our application. It will not be necessary again until 2011.
Auburn University's HA Program takes pride in the fact that we were the first undergraduate program so certified in the state of Alabama.

The HA Alumni Organization, meeting on Saturday the 14th, has elected four new officers to its board.
Chris Cosby of East Alabama Medical Center has been elected President. Ansley Langley of AIM Healthcare Services has been elected Secretary Treasurer. Jennifer Hindmon of Decatur Health and Rehabilitation and Trent Jackson of East Alabama Medical Center Oak Park were elected as at-large board members.
In other business, members of the alumni organization discussed funding a scholarship and plans for its Spring 2007 meeting, to be held Friday, February 23rd and Saturday, February 24th.
On Friday the 23rd, a series of educational presentations will be held covering several "hot topics" in the field. Some of these will be eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from relevant professional organizations. There will also be a social event for alums and current students that evening.
Saturday the 24th will be the organization's business meeting, followed by an opportunity to meet for golf or a tour of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art on South College.
HA Program Directors serve a three-year term, and this will be Dr. Burns' second successive term as Director. His new term will last until Fall 2009.
A graduate of Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee, Dr. Burns holds his doctorate
from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. He has been teaching at Auburn
since 1975. Dr. Burns holds professional memberships in such groups as the Health
Information Management Systems Society, the American Public Health Association,
the Academy of Management, and the American Political Science Association.

HHAO, the HA student organization, will hold its first meeting of the year Monday, September 18th at 7:00 P.M. in the Eagle’s Nest.
Topic for the evening will be internships, with Dr. Rene' McEldowney as featured speaker. This is a required meeting for all students planning to intern this academic year.
HADM 3300, Introduction to Health
Administration, will be taught in Spring 2007 by Mr. Trent Jackson, Operations
Manager of East Alabama Medical Center Oak Park. He has also worked at Limestone
Health Facility, Athens, Alabama.
Mr. Jackson is a 2005 graduate of the Health Administration Program and holds a Master of Science in Management from Faulkner University, Montgomery, Alabama.. He is also a former HHAO President.
Program Director Dr. Mark Burns commented: "We look forward to Mr. Jackson's
sharing his administrative experiences with students in Health Administration
as well as his enthusiasm for the field of health administration."

Dr. Bobrowski is a Fulbright Research Fellow and has served as Department Chair of Management and Marketing at SUNY/Oswego. The author of numerous articles on management and health administration, Dr. Bobrowski holds degrees in both management and nursing. This past Fall, she taught the Finance course for Health Administration.
We look forward to Dr. Bobrowski's further contributions to our Program.

Students planning to take coursework Summer of 2006 need to be aware of an HA schedule change.
HADM 3300, Introduction to HA, will NOT be offered this summer and has been removed from the 2005-2006 schedule of HA classes. It will next be offered Spring of 2007.
The HHAO concluded its Fall Semester with a Christmas Celebration gathering December 1 at the Auburn Ale House.
Best wishes to all for the coming year, and especially good luck to our graduating seniors, Stacy Andrews and Casey Griffin Oliver.

The process started with the submission of multiple binders (see below) full of such materials as our course syllabi, faculty vitas, and general information about the Program. Over the course of the next year, the application will be studied by a three-person review committee of faculty from other AUPHA programs across the United States. The process will end in June 2006 with a meeting of that committee and Drs. Burns and McEldowney at the annual AUPHA meeting in Seattle.
Auburn's HA Program was first certified by the AUPHA in 1995, becoming the first undergraduate HA Program in the state of Alabama to be so certified. It was recertified in summer of 2000.

Featured speaker will be Terry Daniel, a pharmaceutical representative with Hawthorne Pharmaceuticals. Terry will talk about careers in pharmaceutical sales and about the pharmaceutical industry in general.

at 1:00 p.m. Auburn University Golf Club at Yarbrough Farms. The cost will be

Featured speaker will Phyllis Vickers, career counselor from the AU Department of Career Services, who will conduct a resume workshop and offer tips for graduate school applications and on professionalism in general.
In addition, HA student attendance at the forthcoming Alabama MGMA conference will be discussed.
Focus of the meeting will be on long-term care, with speakers on nursing home and hospice care. There will also be discussion of plans to visit Camellia Place
(local assisted living facility) to spread Christmas cheer and deliver poinsettias to the residents.

I've just spoken with our executive director, Irene, about 2-3 entry-level positions within our department. She is working with state personnel to create a few positions. They will probably be State Professional Trainee positions which would later turn into regular merit system positions (Human Services Program Specialists ~ see below). Trainees get the same benefits as merit system employees, but have a 1-2 year limited tenure.

KIND OF WORK
Employees in this class manage statewide grants and analyze information and data related to programs for the elderly and undertake special studies on the needs of the elderly. Work also involves providing technical assistance to regional and local agencies and organizations concerned with aging. As incumbents gain experience, more complex duties such as project management, development of methodologies for research and evaluation, and conducting planning studies are assigned. Work is performed with considerable independence within agency policies and regulations and is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences and review of periodic and special reports.

Selected Job Descriptions
Assistant Teacher - $6.12 Work with children, set up activities, and provide quality supervised group play that will attribute to the center in a positive way.
Qualifications: High school graduate, must have Alabama driver's license and able to drive a 15 passenger van. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a love for children.
Registration Rep - $7.76 Pre-admitting patients by entering demographic and insurance information into STAR. Done by telephone.
Qualifications: Data entry experience with typing speed of 35-40 wpm. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to deal with patients and public. Medical Terminology and prior health care industry experience is preferred. Prefer two years of prior hospital experience. Good communication skills
Security Rep - $7.76 Under general supervision, but according to prescribed procedures, responsible for providing a safe and protected hospital environment. Conducts scheduled protection patrols throughout the entire hospital and parking lots utilizing security policies and procedures. Renders primary support services in areas of psychiatric facility, emergency room, and other patient care areas through non-violent crisis intervention techniques. Maintains good public relations image through the operation of the hospital courtesy programs.
Qualifications: Must possess appropriate vehicle operator's license. Interpersonal skills necessary. Constant walking and standing required in maintaining patrols. Large amounts of heavy lifting and physical stress created by dealing with out of control patients. Must be 23 years old, have good driving record. Two years current work record.
Transporter - $6.40 Transport patients in wheelchairs or stretchers. Responsible for safe and efficient transportation of patient on a scheduled basis. Transport all meal trays to patients and back to dietary department. Requires constant walking/standing.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; ability to maintain daily work records; knowledge of location of various services provided for patients. Ability to lift 100 lbs and endure a large amount of standing, walking, and lifting. Excellent communication skills. One year of current satisfactory employment for in house applicants
Unit Clerk and Staffing Clerk - $6.92 Provide clerical support for assigned nursing unit. Transcribe Physician's orders, schedule diagnostic tests and therapies for patients (most of which are computerized), assemble and maintain patient charts and respond to telephone and intercom calls.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Previous computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred with 40 wpm typing.

Mr. Darrell Crutchley is teaching HADM 4100 (Finance in Health Administration). Mr. Crutchley has an MBA from Virginia Tech and a Master of Education degree from Auburn University. He has taught previously at Auburn University and Auburn University at Montgomery.
Ms. Rebecca Hall is teaching HADM 4850 (Long-Term Care Policy). Ms. Hall has a Master of Education degree from the University of Georgia and has taught previously at Georgia College. She brings to the classroom an extensive background with the Alabama Department of Public Health in areas related to long-term care.
Dr. Michael Kincaid is teaching HADM 4800 (Health Administration and Regulation). Dr. Kincaid received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Alabama and holds Master's degrees in both Business Administration and Psychology. He is director of the Lowder Center for Family Business and Entrepreneurship in Auburn's College of Business and has wide experience of consulting in the health care field.
Our program is fortunate to have the services of these talented individuals.

The Political Science Department has identified a local professional qualified and willing to teach the Finance course (HADM 4100). The process of securing official approval from Auburn's Administration to hire this person is underway.
Discussions are ongoing with another professional concerning the
teaching
of Regulation (HADM 4800).

The guest speaker is Mr. Charlie Faulkner from Baptist Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, the state regent for the ACHE. Mr. Faulkner will be speaking about his career path and any advice he may have for individuals entering the field of health administration as well as the importance of getting involved in organizations such as the ACHE.
In addition, there will be discussion of the upcoming trip to UAB this Friday and the MGMA Conference in March.
