HA Program Re-Approved by AUPHA

Ms. Lydia Reed, President and CEO of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), has notified HA Program Director Dr. Mark Burns of the re-certification of our Program. Ms Reed writers: "I am pleased to inform you that the Association of University Programs in Health Administration Board of Directors voted to continue Full Undergraduate Certification of Auburn University."

The process of re-certification of our Program began in Fall 2005 with the filing of our application. It will not be necessary again until 2011.

Auburn University's HA Program takes pride in the fact that we were the first undergraduate program so certified in the state of Alabama.

HA Alumni Elect New Officers, Plan Spring Meeting

The HA Alumni Organization, meeting on Saturday the 14th, has elected four new officers to its board.

Chris Cosby of East Alabama Medical Center has been elected President. Ansley Langley of AIM Healthcare Services has been elected Secretary Treasurer. Jennifer Hindmon of Decatur Health and Rehabilitation and Trent Jackson of East Alabama Medical Center Oak Park were elected as at-large board members.

In other business, members of the alumni organization discussed funding a scholarship and plans for its Spring 2007 meeting, to be held Friday, February 23rd and Saturday, February 24th.

On Friday the 23rd, a series of educational presentations will be held covering several "hot topics" in the field. Some of these will be eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from relevant professional organizations. There will also be a social event for alums and current students that evening.

Saturday the 24th will be the organization's business meeting, followed by an opportunity to meet for golf or a tour of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art on South College.

Burns Re-Appointed as Program Director

Dr. Mark Burns has been re-appointed Program Director for Health Administration.

HA Program Directors serve a three-year term, and this will be Dr. Burns' second successive term as Director. His new term will last until Fall 2009.

A graduate of Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee, Dr. Burns holds his doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. He has been teaching at Auburn since 1975. Dr. Burns holds professional memberships in such groups as the Health Information Management Systems Society, the American Public Health Association, the Academy of Management, and the American Political Science Association.

Jackson to Teach HA Course in Spring

HADM 3300, Introduction to Health Administration, will be taught in Spring 2007 by Mr. Trent Jackson, Operations Manager of East Alabama Medical Center Oak Park. He has also worked at Limestone Health Facility, Athens, Alabama.

Mr. Jackson is a 2005 graduate of the Health Administration Program and holds a Master of Science in Management from Faulkner University, Montgomery, Alabama.. He is also a former HHAO President.

Program Director Dr. Mark Burns commented: "We look forward to Mr. Jackson's sharing his administrative experiences with students in Health Administration as well as his enthusiasm for the field of health administration."

HHAO members assembled at Provino's Restaurant April 19 for their annual banquet.

2005-2006 President Jennifer Hindmon gave the invocation. This year's 1st Vice President Randi Hall introduced next year's officers, recently elected.

Dr. Rene' McEldowney presented this year's HA Scholarship award to Mark Craddock. Dr. Mark Burns presented the AUPHA/McGaw Scholarship award to Regan Couch. Graduating senior of the program were also introdued.

Congratulations to our graduating seniors and to the newly HHAO elected officers. Thanks to all the 2005-2006 officers who served so well this year.

Dr. Paula Bobrowski Joins HA Faculty

The Health Administration Program is pleased to announce that Dr. Paula Bobrowksi, formerly of SUNY/Oswego, will be joining our HA faculty as a full-time professor beginning Fall of 2006.

Dr. Bobrowski is a Fulbright Research Fellow and has served as Department Chair of Management and Marketing at SUNY/Oswego. The author of numerous articles on management and health administration, Dr. Bobrowski holds degrees in both management and nursing. This past Fall, she taught the Finance course for Health Administration.

We look forward to Dr. Bobrowski's further contributions to our Program.

Scholarship Deadline

The deadline for the 2006-2007 HA Scholarship is approaching. March 24 is the last day for such applications to be received.

Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and should not be receiving any University-based scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year.

  1. An HADM 4970 special topics class on Marketing which was originally scheduled for Fall 2006 has been moved to Spring 2007.
  2. An HADM 4970 special topics class on Computer Applications originally scheduled for Spring 2007 has been cancelled.
  3. An additional offering of HADM 2200, Health Policy, will be available Spring 2007.

HA Program Re-Applies for AUPHA Certification

Auburn's HA Program has begun the process of being re-certified by the prestigious Association of University Programs in Health Administration..

The process started with the submission of multiple binders (see below) full of such materials as our course syllabi, faculty vitas, and general information about the Program. Over the course of the next year, the application will be studied by a three-person review committee of faculty from other AUPHA programs across the United States. The process will end in June 2006 with a meeting of that committee and Drs. Burns and McEldowney at the annual AUPHA meeting in Seattle.

Auburn's HA Program was first certified by the AUPHA in 1995, becoming the first undergraduate HA Program in the state of Alabama to be so certified. It was recertified in summer of 2000.

Spring HA Alumni Meeting

The HA Alumni Organization will have its spring meeting on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 8:30 a.m. in Ariccia Restaurant at the A.U. Conference Center. There will be no charge for breakfast. Members can park at the conference center.

On Thursday, February 24, HA Program Director Mark Burns will launch a new opportunity for student input into the HA Program.

From 11:30 to 12:30, Dr, Burns will be available in the Foy Union cafeteria to talk informally with students about the Program, HA careers, graduate study, or anything else they want to discuss. Non-HA's interested in the possibility of an HA major are also welcome.

Since the cafeteria is also a wireless "hot spot", Dr. Burns will also have his laptop handy in case a concern involves something on the HA Website or other Internet resource.

This activity will be continued throughout the semester on the last Thursday of the month, same time. So if you wish to talk, but can't come this Thursday, come to the next session. Just look for Dr. Burns, his laptop, and a sign on the table that says "Health Administration and Lunch".

Remember, all questions, suggestions, or ideas are welcomed. So drop by even if you just want to say "hi".

Alabama MGMA Conference

The statewide MGMA conference is March 3rd, and the HHAO is organizing a trip there. Students will leave on March 2nd.

HHAO Meeting Tuesday

The HHAO will be meeting on Tuesday January 25 in the North Eagles Nest, Haley Center. Take the elevators to the 9th floor, and follow the signs to the stairs.

Featured speaker will Phyllis Vickers, career counselor from the AU Department of Career Services, who will conduct a resume workshop and offer tips for graduate school applications and on professionalism in general.

In addition, HA student attendance at the forthcoming Alabama MGMA conference will be discussed.

HHAO Meeting Tonight

The HHAO will be meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the Eagle's Nest in Haley.

Focus of the meeting will be on long-term care, with speakers on nursing home and hospice care. There will also be discussion of plans to visit Camellia Place (local assisted living facility) to spread Christmas cheer and deliver poinsettias to the residents.

Positions in Long-Term Care

Tara Shaver-Jarman of the Alabama Department of Senior Services sends word about the following positions:

I've just spoken with our executive director, Irene, about 2-3 entry-level positions within our department. She is working with state personnel to create a few positions. They will probably be State Professional Trainee positions which would later turn into regular merit system positions (Human Services Program Specialists ~ see below). KIND OF WORK
Employees in this class manage statewide grants and analyze information and data related to programs for the elderly and undertake special studies on the needs of the elderly. Work also involves providing technical assistance to regional and local agencies and organizations concerned with aging. As incumbents gain experience, more complex duties such as project management, development of methodologies for research and evaluation, and conducting planning studies are assigned. Work is performed with considerable independence within agency policies and regulations and is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences and review of periodic and special reports.

HA Alumni Meeting Oct. 9

The Fall 2004 meeting of the HA Alumni Association will take place in Auburn at the club room of Camellia Place at 9:00 on Saturday Oct. 9.

HA Scholarship Announced

Applications for the 2004-2005 Health Administration Scholarship are now being taken. Qualified applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and should not be receiving any University-based scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year.

To apply, students should submit an application from, a copy of their transcripts, and a two-page essay on their personal theory of management style.

For further information, or to obtain a copy of an application form, students should contact Dr. McEldowney, 7012 Haley Center.

Burns to Assume Program Directorship

HA Website Coordinator Dr. Mark Burns will assume the office of Program Director as of January 2004.

Dr. Burns has been a faculty member at Auburn since 1975 and previously served as Program Director from 1975 to 1998.

Under policies adopted in 1995 by HA's parent Department of Political Science, Program Directors serve a limited term but may serve more than once. Dr. Burns's term will run until August 2006.

AED Speaker from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals

Next Thursday, October 23rd, the AED Pre-Health Honorary will hear from Mr. Ralph Chester, Pfizer Corporate District Manager. HA Students interestd in learning more about opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry are welcome to attend. (In the past, several of our graduates have obtained jobs in the area pharmaceutical sales.)

The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm in the Chemistry Building, Room 151, and is open to all students, not just members of AED.

Important HA Course Changes

HADM 4100, Finance, will not be offered this coming Spring (2004) due to lack of a suitable instructor. However, because of this change, the section to be offered in the academic year 2004-2005 will be moved in that schedule to Fall 2004 rather than Spring 2005.

Also, HADM 4800, Regulation, will also be moved from Fall 2004 to Spring 2005.

Any student who is graduating Spring 2004 and was counting on Finance being offered then because he/she hasn't taken it, needs to contact his/her HA adviser ASAP.

Selected Job Descriptions

Assistant Teacher - $6.12 Work with children, set up activities, and provide quality supervised group play that will attribute to the center in a positive way.

Qualifications: High school graduate, must have Alabama driver's license and able to drive a 15 passenger van. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a love for children.

Registration Rep - $7.76 Pre-admitting patients by entering demographic and insurance information into STAR. Done by telephone.

Qualifications: Data entry experience with typing speed of 35-40 wpm. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to deal with patients and public. Medical Terminology and prior health care industry experience is preferred. Prefer two years of prior hospital experience. Good communication skills

Security Rep - $7.76 Under general supervision, but according to prescribed procedures, responsible for providing a safe and protected hospital environment. Conducts scheduled protection patrols throughout the entire hospital and parking lots utilizing security policies and procedures. Renders primary support services in areas of psychiatric facility, emergency room, and other patient care areas through non-violent crisis intervention techniques. Maintains good public relations image through the operation of the hospital courtesy programs.

Qualifications: Must possess appropriate vehicle operator's license. Interpersonal skills necessary. Constant walking and standing required in maintaining patrols. Large amounts of heavy lifting and physical stress created by dealing with out of control patients. Must be 23 years old, have good driving record. Two years current work record.

Transporter - $6.40 Transport patients in wheelchairs or stretchers. Responsible for safe and efficient transportation of patient on a scheduled basis. Transport all meal trays to patients and back to dietary department. Requires constant walking/standing.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; ability to maintain daily work records; knowledge of location of various services provided for patients. Ability to lift 100 lbs and endure a large amount of standing, walking, and lifting. Excellent communication skills. One year of current satisfactory employment for in house applicants

Unit Clerk and Staffing Clerk - $6.92 Provide clerical support for assigned nursing unit. Transcribe Physician's orders, schedule diagnostic tests and therapies for patients (most of which are computerized), assemble and maintain patient charts and respond to telephone and intercom calls.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Previous computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred with 40 wpm typing.

New Faculty

HA Students are seeing some new faculty faces this semester.

Mr. Darrell Crutchley is teaching HADM 4100 (Finance in Health Administration). Mr. Crutchley has an MBA from Virginia Tech and a Master of Education degree from Auburn University. He has taught previously at Auburn University and Auburn University at Montgomery.

Ms. Rebecca Hall is teaching HADM 4850 (Long-Term Care Policy). Ms. Hall has a Master of Education degree from the University of Georgia and has taught previously at Georgia College. She brings to the classroom an extensive background with the Alabama Department of Public Health in areas related to long-term care.

Dr. Michael Kincaid is teaching HADM 4800 (Health Administration and Regulation). Dr. Kincaid received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Alabama and holds Master's degrees in both Business Administration and Psychology. He is director of the Lowder Center for Family Business and Entrepreneurship in Auburn's College of Business and has wide experience of consulting in the health care field.

Our program is fortunate to have the services of these talented individuals.

Change in Regulation Course

Students registered for HADM 4800, HA and Regulation, or students considering registering for the course, need to be aware that the old section of the course, originally scheduled to be taught by Dr. Tennyson, has been cancelled, and a new section has been created meeting at a different time and place.

The new offering will meet in the Lowder Business Building, Room 0026,Thursdays 5-7:30 PM.

Progress on HADM 4100 and HADM 4800

Progress is being made in the effort to find alternative instructors for the courses originally scheduled to be taught Fall by Dr. Tennyson (see news item below).

The Political Science Department has identified a local professional qualified and willing to teach the Finance course (HADM 4100). The process of securing official approval from Auburn's Administration to hire this person is underway.

Discussions are ongoing with another professional concerning the teaching of Regulation (HADM 4800).

Dr. Tennyson Resigns

On August 8, Dr. Debra Tennyson resigned as a faculty member at Auburn University, about one month after she had notified Political Science Department Chair Dr. Paul Johnson of her possible intention to do so. Other HA faculty received no direct information from Dr. Tennyson about this matter until August 8.

Effective immediately, assignment of HA students to faculty advisers will be as follows:

HHAO Meeting

The HHAO will meet Feb. 10 at 6pm in Haley Center room #3196.

The guest speaker is Mr. Charlie Faulkner from Baptist Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, the state regent for the ACHE. Mr. Faulkner will be speaking about his career path and any advice he may have for individuals entering the field of health administration as well as the importance of getting involved in organizations such as the ACHE.

In addition, there will be discussion of the upcoming trip to UAB this Friday and the MGMA Conference in March.
