Where Do Graduate Schools in HA Rank?

In selecting possible graduate schools, students often wonder how they compare to each other. Recently U.S. News and World Report (March 10, 1997, p. 88) reported the following rankings of top institutions, based on a survey of administrators of accredited schools in the field:

Institution Score
1. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
4.6
2. Northwestern University-Kellog
4.4
3. U. of North Carolina Chapel Hill
4.2
4. University of Minnesota
4.1
4. University of Pennsylvania-Wharton
4.1
6. University of Washington
4.0
7. VCU/Medical College of Virginia
3.8
8. Johns Hopkins U. (Md.)
3.7
8. University of Alabama-Birmingham
3.7
8. University of California-Berkeley
3.7

In 1993, the same magazine rated the top 12 graduate schools in this area. The following institutions that did not make the smaller 1997 rankings were included then: Washington University (St. Louis), ranked 9; tied for 12th place were the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of Iowa, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconson-Madison, and Ohio State University. The 1993 rankings are also available on this Website for those who wish to compare further details with the current rankings.
