FAQ: Graduate Study in HA--Part 1
The Basics
This document is the first in a series of three HA Web pages discussing
graduate study. The other two are:
The current document discusses basic questions about the nature of
graduate study.
Does it matter whether I obtain a graduate degree?
Definitely. If you expect to advance to the highest levels of the HA
profession, a graduate degree will usually be necessary.
Does it matter if I seek a job now and pursue graduate work later?
Not in most cases. In fact, most graduate institutions welcome applicants
with job experience. Some even prefer experienced applicants. The only
disadvantage of not pursuing graduate study immediately may be difficulty in
later disengaging yourself from a job commitment to return to school.
What is involved in a Master's degree
in HA?
This differs from program to program. However, a typical M.H.A. program
may last two years following completion of the undergraduate degree.
Often the first year of study emphasizes formal courses, whereas the
second may involve writing a Master's thesis and/or working as an
administrative intern in a health care setting.
Does Auburn offer a graduate degree in HA?
No. A Master of
Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree is offered. Some specialization
in the health administration area is available within this degree, but
this should not be confused with an MHA or MPH. Such an option is
primarily recommended for students who wish to stay at Auburn for
personal reasons (e.g. spouse or family ), especially those with an
inclination toward government service. Otherwise, an MHA or MPH is probably
preferable.
What Alabama institutions offer HA graduate degrees?
Only the University of
Alabama in Birmingham (UAB). The HHAO usually sponsors a field trip
to the UAB program once a year or invites representatives from the UAB
program to make a presentation at Auburn. Contact any
HHAO officer for further information.
What other nearby institutions offer HA graduate degrees?
The other relatively close institution offering an HA graduate degree is
Georgia State University. As in the case
of UAB, the HHAO in the past has sponsored both field trips to and
on-campus visits by the GSU program. Contact any
HHAO officer for further information.
You can also use the related Web page on HA graduate
schools to learn about more programs in the Southeast.
What about other possible graduate schools?
Almost every state has at least one graduate program. A good place to
start looking is the Web list of HA graduate schools
mentioned above. Another option is to contact the Association of
University Programs in Health Administration. , for information on
their latest
copy of Health Services Administration Education; this book,
covering all accredited HA graduate programs, is available at moderate
cost.
