Degree Requirements

Philosophy Major:

Requisite: logic or ethics, whichever was not taken as a Core course (3).

The major requires 9 hours in history of philosophy which shall be met by taking:
PHIL 3330 Ancient & Early Medieval Philosophy (3), and PHIL 3340 Late Medieval & Early Modern Philosophy (3), and PHIL 3350 Recent & Contemporary Philosophy (3)
or
by taking any two of the above plus one 3-hour course substitution drawn from approved alternatives and allowed in consultation with the department chair.

Philosophy Option: The student will then choose 21 additional hours of PHIL courses, no more than 6 hours of which may be at the 1000 or 2000 level, and at least 6 hours of which must be at the 4000 level.

Religious Studies Option: The student will then take:
RELG 2010 Introduction to Religious Studies (3) and PHIL 3300 Philosophy of Religion (3)
and
either RELG 3330 Eastern Religions (3) or RELG 3340 Western Religions (3)
and
either PHIL 3400 Medieval Philosophy (3) or PHIL 3740 Existentialism (3)
and
nine additional hours of RELG courses at or above the 3000 level. HIST 3040 American Religious History (3) and ENGL 3360 The Bible for Students of Literature (3) may be approved by the area advisor for 6 of these 9 hours.
Hours in Major: 33 Hrs.
University Core: 41 Hrs.
College Core: 11 Hrs.
Electives: 35 Hrs.
Total Hours Required: 120 Hrs.


Philosophy Minor:

Prerequisites: PHIL 1010 Introduction to Logic or a university core ethics course. 15 hours, to include a university core ethics course or PHIL 1010 (whichever was not taken to satisfy the university core) and 12 hours at or above the 3000 level. (Total: 18 Hrs.)


Religious Studies Minor:

One university core ethics course, and PHIL 1010 Introduction to Logic, and RELG 1010 Introduction to Religious Studies, and 9 additional hours in RELG at or above the 3000 level. (Total: 18 Hrs.)


Suggested Pre-Law Track for Philosophy Majors:

For many people, philosophy is the most exciting of all academic subjects. But many students do not have the luxury of being able to study it in college. They believe they must major in business, or engineering, or some other major closely related to the work they plan to do. Pre-law students, on the other hand, not only are free to major in philosophy but, in important ways, it is the most practical of all majors for their careers.
