Greeks to Shakespeare.
ENGL 2200
World Literature IFall 2003
Dr. Joseph S. Walker
Working from Volumes A-C of the Norton Anthology of World Literature, this course will primarily survey lasting works of Western literature and thought from the Greeks to Shakespeare, a journey of many centuries. My main goal is to promote active and critical engagement with these texts. We will look beyond their often intimidating surfaces and enduring reputations to the actual words themselves, playfully teasing out the possible meanings of and responses to specific passages. Discussion, not lecture, will characterize our time together. Thematically, we will seek evidence of what these texts leave out—the marginalized, the silenced, the unexpressed aspects of the circumstances which produced them. Students will write two major papers and three briefer response papers in addition to tests and quizzes.
