The Linguistics & Rhetoric Concentration
Linguistics concerns the systematic study of sounds, structures,
and meanings of language and the social dimensions of language use. Besides
learning how language
works in its major systems, students gain an understanding of language usage
by various regional, ethnic, and social groups as well as the functions of
language change. Students learn to appreciate the richness of different
historical and
cultural backgrounds as expressed through the medium of language.
Rhetoric is the art of speaking and writing effectively. It is a powerful
means of persuasion and communication; a student of rhetoric will learn
through studying
literary theory, non-fiction prose, contemporary media, grammar, and teachings
of the great rhetoricians of the past.
Take five of the following courses to complete this concentration:

*may be repeated once for credit with departmental approval
The Linguistics and Rhetoric concentration is giving me the opportunity to learn about the English language in ways far beyond what I expected! Auburn's English Department has not only offered me the keys to the basics of English grammars and history, but is also opening doors for me to explore my personal interest in English linguistic work with non-native speakers through the 'Teaching English as a Second Language' class. |
