Requirements for the English Major
The English Major consists of 36 hours (normally twelve 3-hour courses), not counting any courses used to fulfill the University Core Curriculum. The major divides into three parts:
1. The English Major
Core of four required courses (12 hours).
2. A Concentration of five courses at the 3000-level or higher, in a field
either designated by the department or designed by the student (15 hours).
The department offers four preset concentrations:
| Literature | |
| Linguistics and Rhetoric | |
| Creative Writing | |
| Technical and Professional Communication |
The department also allows a fifth option of an Individually Designed Concentration
3. The student will also take three elective courses, at least one of which must be at the 3000-level or higher (9 hours). Also required but not counted as part of the 36 hours are 12 hours of supporting course work at the 2000-level or higher in a subject chosen by the student, approved by the student’s advisor, and not counting courses used to fulfill the University Core Curriculum. Supporting coursework allows the student the flexibility to add courses in other departments to his or her major curriculum in order to meet one's own intellectual and career goals. These classes do not need to be taken in the same department.
Students must also demonstrate computer competency by taking COMP 1000 or by passing the computer competency test.
