The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation's oldest and most famous undergraduate
honorary society, founded in 1776 at the College of William and
Mary.
Its purpose is to recognize and foster academic excellence in the traditional
arts and sciences. The Auburn chapter was granted its charter in
March 2001.
To be eligible for election to Phi Beta Kappa, students must have a minimum 3.75 GPA in all college coursework and have fulfilled specific distribution requirements. A faculty committee evaluates student transcripts of all students who meet the requirement. Students are elected by faculty members who belong to the Auburn chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Our department is well represented in the governance of Phi Beta Kappa: Joyce Rothschild is president and Drew Clark is secretary of the Auburn University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for 2003–04. Timothy Dykstal served on the committee that carefully examined student transcripts and recommended students for election, and Bert Hitchcock chaired the committee on honorary and alumni members.
