Great Flicks for Fall
2003!
The following is a list of movies the Great
Flicks series will be screening during the Fall semester. The order is fixed;
exact dates to be assigned shortly.
LE MEPRIS [Contempt] (Godard, 1963)
The story of the breakup of a marriage is set
against the filming of a new version of the Odyssey in this French New Wave film
(some adult content, including Bardot nude).
OEDIPUS REX (Guthrie and Polonsky 1957)
An attempt to present the play (in a
translation by Yeats) as closely as possible to original conditions of
production—actors wear masks, stylized oration, etc.
DUCK SOUP (1933)
Classic Marx brothers romp satirizing
politics and war. If possible, this will be run with a cartoon and a newsreel,
to stimulate a period screening.
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
OF MICE AND MEN (Gary Sinise 1992)
Faithful adaptation of Steinbeck novel, with
John Malkovich as Lenny.
CITIZEN KANE (Welles 1941)
Obscure art film made by a bunch of radio
actors. Can be used to illustrate concepts of narrative, point of view, etc.
Either BANDIT QUEEN or APU SANSAR
[World of Apu]
Both are Indian films; choice will be finalized after previewing Bandit Queen.
LOOKING FOR RICHARD (Pacino, 1996)
