Department Picnic -- Chewacla State Park -- Saturday, August 28, 2002 -- 4:00 p.m. until dusk
You are invited to the annual English department picnic hosted by George and Carolyn Crandell on Saturday, August 24, 2002, from 4 p.m. until dusk at the Upper Picnic Area in Chewacla State Park (Map located at: www.auburn.edu/english/news/edn/parkmap.htm).

To be sure that we have enough food, beverages, and supplies, please e-mail english@auburn.edu  by Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 4:40 pm with the number of adults and children who will attend.

Spouses, significant others, and children are all welcome to come. We have reserved the Upper Picnic Area and will provide a meat dish, beverages, ice, plates, cups, napkins, and forks.  We ask that you bring a salad, a vegetable, or a dessert to share. No alcoholic beverages are permitted in Alabama state parks.

Arrive at any time you wish but plan to eat around 5:00 p.m. Picnic tables are available under the pavilion and scattered throughout the park. We will gather-rain or shine!

Chewacla State Park has hiking trails and open spaces for games and other activities. Bring frisbees, lawn chairs, musical instruments-- or simply plan to eat and socialize. The admission fee is $2 for adults and $1 for children 6-11. There is no charge for children under 6.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Great Flicks
The Great Books program will be hosting a series of movies on selected Wednesday nights this semester.  The movies represent a range of films and include films of possible interest to faculty and students in both Great Books I and Great Books II.

Feel free to incorporate these films into your teaching as you see fit.  You might wish to require your students to attend the showing of a film based on a text you are teaching, encourage students to attend films related to time periods or subjects you are covering through other texts, or decide not to use the film in any way in your teaching.  The choice is entirely up to you.  All students, however, are invited to attend the movies.

For a complete list of movies, click here:  "Great Flicks" series.  For more information, please see Constance C. Relihan, Coordinator of Great Books.

Society for Technical Communication Chapter Pacesetter Award
Auburn University’s Technical and Professional Communication program and the Birmingham Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication received the 2001-2002 STC Pacesetter Award.

The chapter pacesetter award recognizes chapters for highly innovative and successful activities.  The award is for excellence in innovative programming.  The citation reads:

For reaching out to the student and professional members of the Birmingham Chapter
despite their geographic location, especially for the 2nd Annual April in Auburn Workshop.

The award plaque has been presented to the Department of English and is displayed in 9030D.

Participating as moderators or presenters at the Workshop in April were MTPC students Alise Chabaud, Lowell Lambert, Heather Lord, and Nathan Meier.  MTPC student Amanda Ray and undergraduate English major Brooke Bullman were in charge of registration.  Faculty participating as moderators or presenters were Dr. Don Cunningham, Dr. Joyce Rothschild, and Dr. Betsy Smith.

Art Cinema
A manager at the Wynnsong 16 Carmike Cinemas is interested in helping us get an Art Cinema theatre established.  Art Cinemas usually show "Indie" films and foreign language films.  To convince Carmike to do this he needs to show that there is support for this idea in Auburn.  To show your support, please email Emmett Winn, Dept. of Communication and Journalism, at winnjoh@auburn.edu

Diane Boyd, Patsy Fowler, Kelley Swilley were hooded at the graduation ceremonies August 5.  Congratulations!
