Diversity and Tolerance

There will be a general College of Liberal Arts discussion of tolerance/diversity issues on December 10 beginning at 3:00 in Thach Hall 202.

The university is considering various ways of promoting greater tolerance and appreciation of diversity on campus. Among the possibilities is some sort of curricular response: an increased emphasis on tolerance/diversity in existing courses or the creation of a new course/courses specifically in this area.

The meeting is open to everyone.

Multimedia Classrooms - HC 3104, 3174, and 3182

Faculty and GTAs now have several opportunities to use technology in class activities. We have been given control of the multimedia rooms HC 3104, 3174, and 3182 for assigning classes to meet in the rooms. The computer-based writing classrooms, HC 3116 and 3143, are available. And, every room in Haley Center will be wired for the Internet by Spring 2002.

Request forms for the use of multimedia classrooms are downloadable from the Multimedia and Computer Classroom Procedures (pdf file). Completed forms should be placed in Betsy Smith's mailbox by 4:40 on December 3.

The sign up for HC 3116 and 3143 is Monday, December 10 at 2:00 -- program to be announced.

Great Books Notes

The Great Books Program is coordinating a "Their Eyes Were Watching God" project for spring semester. The project is in the initial planning stages, but we're envisioning a variety of events like readings, related cultural events (food? music? poetry?), and so on. If you are teaching this text in the spring or can contribute somehow to the project, please email Jessica Van Slooten at vansljl@auburn.edu.

8th Annual Association for Core Texts and Courses Conference

The deadline to submit proposals for the 8th Annual ACTC Conference, "Re(-)forming Liberal Education: the Core -- Its Teachers, Students, and Texts -- after the 20th Century," is December 31.  The conference is set for April 4-7, 2002 in Montreal.

Proposals include (but are not limited to) prospective and new core text programs, review of old programs, globalizing programs, political philosophy and education, Greek, roman, and Biblical texts, Muslim and Middle East tests and authors, American classics in music and art, African American writers, women writers, scientific works...and more.

For more details, contact Constance Relihan.

Academy of American Poets Prize

An early reminder: The deadline for the Robert Hughes Mount, Jr., Academy of American Poets Prize, open to graduate and undergraduate students, will be March 1, 2002. Last year's judge was Katherine Soniat ("Alluvial," "A Shared Life," and others). Last year's winner was Kimberly Martz, and Honorable Mention went to Allie Stacker, both seniors in English. Details will be announced in January. For more information, contact Jeremy Downes, Poetry Prize Coordinator.
