The Results Are In: Truman (Not Dewey) Wins!
 |
Avoiding the election hoopla, Cameron William Truman arrived
on Monday, November 6, 2000 at 10:35 p.m. Initially, he weighed nine pounds and nine ounces and measured
22 inches. These numbers are expected to increase with each recount. Hilary, James, and sister,
Anna, are all doing well. Cameron is pictured at left.

Nominees for Benson Lecturer Sought
The Benson Lectures Committee invites nominations for a speaker to deliver
the 2001 Carl Benson Lecture in Twentieth-Century Literature. This endowed lecture series began as a
memorial tribute to Dr. Carl Benson (1916-1979), Hargis professor of English and a prominent
member of the Auburn faculty from 1947 to 1974.
A nominee should be "a distinguished writer or prominent scholar in
twentieth-century literature in English." We are especially interested in nominees who reside in the
region or who will be in the vicinity of Auburn in the spring.
The committee would be pleased to see biographical information about
the candidates or a bibliography of the candidates' published works. We ask that you do not contact
nominees.
Please submit your nominations and supporting materials to George Crandell (chair
of the nominating committee) by Friday, November 17, 2000.
Assessment Meeting Scheduled
A meeting to discuss the intended student educational outcomes and
the procedures for assessing those outcomes will be held Monday, December 4, in HC 3184
from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Interested faculty are invited. There will be no
comestibles or liquid refreshments, but the bureaucratic boogie will be demonstrated.
For further information, please contact
Don Cunningham.
Question of the Week
What role do (or should) current events play in the development of writing
assignments in composition courses? Please respond to this week's question in The Forum. If you have forgotten your password, please
contact George
Crandell.
Dave Haney's book,
The Challenge of Coleridge: Ethics and Interpretation in Romanticism and Modern
Philosophy, has just been published in Penn State Press's Literature and Philosophy
series.
Jim McKelly has been recognized by the Auburn Panhellenic Council
as an "outstanding professor for Fall Semester 2000." It is the third such university-wide
teaching commendation he has received in the last four years."
Tom Nunnally delivered "Morphology at the Motel: Trademark Law and Linguistic
Analysis" at the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics meeting (concurrent with SAMLA) November 11th in
Birmingham. The paper arose from Tom's work as an "expert witness" in a trademark infringement court
case this summer.
If you would like to include an item in the
"Personal Notes" section of The English Channel, please submit your note
to George Crandell.
