Graduate Studies Committee Announces Meetings

The Graduate Studies Committee will meet at 1:10 in 9030D on Nov. 3, Nov. 17, and Dec. 1.   Agendas and minutes are posted on the EGO bulletin board as soon as they are available.   Additional material under discussion by the GSC is available in a folder in HC 9022.

A.A.U.P. Sponsors Reception for New Faculty

The
Auburn Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) would like to invite all faculty to our annual reception to be held on Wednesday, November 3rd, at 4:00 p.m. at Pebble Hill. Please see MAP.
Join us for refreshments and to help us welcome our new colleagues!

Call for Papers

Constance Relihan and a colleague are interested in editing a collection of new essays on early modern (1580-1640) English prose fiction and the construction of sexualities.  Please pick up a more detailed call for papers (deadline August 31, 2000) from Constance Relihan if you know someone who might be interested in submitting an essay for consideration.

It's Mock Interview Time!

Graduate Students and instructors wishing to go through a mock MLA interview should contact Jon Bolton or Constance Relihan, the job placement advisors, by November 10th.   Interviews will most likely be conducted during the week following Thanksgiving.   We hope to have a committee of three professorial faculty members, including one whose research area overlaps with the candidate's interests, conduct each interview.
Professorial faculty members please note: if students/instructors in your field request an interview you will be contacted about your availability to help conduct the interviews.   We know that your schedules will be very full during the week after Thanksgiving, but hope that you will be able to be generous with whatever time you do have.

Out of Date, Out of Mind

If you have put perishable items in either of the department refrigerators in recent months, please check to see if these same items now need to be discarded.   Coffee cream and other dairy products are a particular problem; recently some cartons of creamer with April expiration dates were removed from the ninth-floor fridge.   As a courtesy to those who use the refrigerators on a daily basis and for the safety of innocent bystanders who could be knocked down by the odor, please don't leave things to spoil.

Tutors Needed for Boys and Girls Club

The Junior League of Lee County and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Lee County are working together to enhance the educational efforts of the Clubs, immediately focusing on the Opelika Club.   So far, the room has been painted, new furniture has been installed, and we are in the process of purchasing new learning materials.   We are awaiting new computers and Internet access.
The next step, and the most important one, is establishing a tutor network for the students, elementary through senior high.   For the rest of this quarter we will appreciate the help of all Auburn University students who have the desire to teach at-risk-but-eager learners and who can schedule an hour or two at the center between 2:30 and 8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.  If you know of any students interested in tutoring, please have them contact Ginny Roy, with the AU Department of Education, who is scheduling tutors.   Any interested students should call her at 844-4448.

Margaret Hundleby attended the annual meeting of the Council of Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication, in Santa Fe, NM, from October 14-17.  She presented a position paper on "Technical Communications in the Culture of Assessment," with Linda Driskill, of Rice University.   She also reported on a special project to investigate the potential relation between CPTSC's self-study guide for departmental programs and the new EC2000 assessment documentation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
