William Cobb to Read from A Spring of Souls

William Cobb, the author of five books of fiction and numerous short stories and essays (and a former Auburn student!), will read from his new book, A Spring of Souls, just published by Crane Hill. Cobb will speak on Wednesday, October 27th, at 4:00 p.m. at the Auburn University Center for the Arts and Humanities (Pebble Hill). Please see
MAP.
In the words of Publishers Weekly, the new book "eviscerates both the militia movement and Southern football mania" and "stirs in small-town Gen-Xers, both black and white, devil worship, magical realism and an apocalyptic Easter Sunday bombshell--plus a generous portion of redemptiveness."
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing, and a reception will follow the reading.

How to Apply to Graduate School

If your students are thinking about graduate school in English or other disciplines, please encourage them to attend an open forum discussion on "How to Apply to Graduate School (and Why Would You Want To?)," on Tuesday, November 2nd at 4:30 p.m. in the Eagle's Nest South.
Dr. Dave Haney, our own Coordinator of Graduate Studies; Elizabeth Latshaw and Eric Hayot, Ph.Ds. and Instructors in the department; and other past and present survivors of the application process will be on hand to describe the process, offer advice, and answer questions.
Refreshments will be served. Tell students to bring a friend: the application process is never easy, but there is solace in numbers.

Reception for New Faculty

The Auburn Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) would like to invite all faculty to our annual reception to be held on Wednesday, November 3rd, at 4:00 p.m. at Pebble Hill. Please see MAP.
Join us for refreshments and to help us welcome our new colleagues!

Literary Theory Resource Now Available Online

At my request, the library will be subscribing to the online version of the Johns Hopkin's Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism. It is currently available on a thirty-day trial basis at www.press.jhu.edu/books/hopkins_guide_to_literary_theory/. Its search features make it a valuable resource for anyone interested in literary theory.      --James Goldstein

Vicki Collins received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor of English at Oregon State University in June.   She reports that she also read a paper at the International Society for the History of Rhetoric in Amsterdam and then used her college award money to support two weeks of research at the Royal Library in The Hague.  Vicki is planning to be married in November!

We are sorry to report that Peter Welt died on October 19, 1999.  If people would like to do anything in memory of Peter, Elly suggested gifts in his memory to Beth Shalom Synagogue here in Auburn.  Peter and Elly were very active in it.
