Society for Technical Communication Workshop

The April meeting of the Birmingham Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication was held in Haley Center on Saturday, 20 April. The meeting brought together 42 students, faculty, and professional technical communicators who collectively engaged in sessions that focused on the theme of the meeting "Working Together." Major topics covered coping with difficult people, collaborating to build a web site, and getting the information you need from people who are not easy to interview or survey. Presenters from the department included Betsy Smith, Joyce Rothschild and Heather Lord. There was also a session on student portfolios in which MTPC students Alise Chabaud, Lowell Lambert, Heather Lord, Nathan Meier, and Amanda Ray displayed their works-in-progress portfolios. The day concluded with a meeting of the advisory group for the Master of Technical and Professional Communication program.

Students recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and other work in their curriculum were MTPC students Alise Chabaud and Heather Lord, who received the Betty Travis Naugle Fellowship for Technical and Professional Communication, and Nathan Meier, who received the AU-Department of English Technical and Professional Communication Award. Brooke Bullman, a junior English major completing the technical and professional communication concentration, received the Birmingham STC Chapter Academic Award in Technical and Professional Communication.

Among the participants were department graduates Karrie Brock, Melissa Heltz, John Garner, Susan Hessler, Melissa Womack, Charlotte Bowman, and Julia Smith.
