Dissertation Prospectus Workshop

What is a dissertation prospectus?
How do you write one?
How do you help your PhD Students write one?

These are some of the questions we will address in a roundtable discussion of the dissertation prospectus process to be held Monday, March 18 at 4:00 p.m. in HC 3104. Both faculty who have guided students through the process and PhD students who have already had their prospectuses approved will lead an informal discussion on how to make the process as useful and efficient as possible for both students and advisors. All faculty and grad students interested in the process are encouraged to come share their wisdom and learn from the experience of others.

"A Taste of East Alabama"

The Domestic Violence Intervention Center (the domestic violence shelter for east Alabama) will hold a fundraiser -- "A Taste of East Alabama" -- featuring food from the area's finest restaurants, on Thursday, March 14, from 6:00-10:00 p.m. at the Opelika Holiday Inn on Hwy. 280 (Exit 62 from I-85).  Tickets are $15 from Tom O'Shea or at the door.  For more information, call the DVIC, 749-1515.

Summer Academy

The Summer Academy is a course development workshop sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and the Instructional Media Group.

In 2002, the Academy is free and open to all teaching faculty at Auburn University. Participation is limited to 15 persons per session. The first academy will coincide with the first five-week summer session, the second with the second five-week session. Both the first and second academy will meet for half a day, five days a week.

Application deadline is March 15, but late applications may be considered.  Faculty interested in participating in the Academy or seeking more information can contact Wiebke Kuhn (kuhnwi1@auburn.edu) or visit the Summer Academy web site at frontpage.auburn.edu/cla/temp.asp?file=tech/sa/sa_main.txt.

Poet Nikki Giovanni to Receive Award at Troy State

Troy State University Montgomery (TSUM) will present Nikki Giovanni with the first Woman of Courage Award during a lecture/reading on March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the TSUM Davis Theatre.  This event is free and open to the public.

This event initiates the first Troy State University Montgomery and Southern Poverty Law Center Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Lecture Series and features Giovanni, a poet, essayist, and lecturer. A special pre-lecture, meet-the-writer event, from 4:30-5:30 p.m., will take place in the TSUM Civic Room in Whitley Hall, where Giovanni has agreed to sign copies of her works. Before the main lecture, interested students can tour the impressive and uplifting Rosa Parks Museum at a discounted admission price of $3.  For more information, email Dr. Ray Wallace at rwallace@tsum.edu.

Graduate Student Resources

For easier access, the file cabinet and book resources have been moved to HC 8011 (the larger computer work area on the 8th floor, next to the new, soon-to-be furnished common area). If you need a key to the room, check with Jean. It is the same key that opens the common area rooms.

Beaux Arts Ball

All students of fine arts schools are invited to attend the Beaux Arts Ball. Traditionally the grand finale of Fine Arts Week at Auburn University, Beaux Arts Ball is sponsored by the AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students). The Beaux Arts Ball is a formal event that will take place on March 16, on the riverboat and marina at Stone Mountain, Georgia.  There will be food and musical entertainment. The theme for the night will be "Days of Decadence" (the 1920s), though costumes are only limited to one's imagination.  Tickets will go on sale this week ($28/person and $50/couple) – look for a table in the Haley Center. Van transportation and hotel arrangements are available.  For more information or to volunteer to help sell tickets, contact Jason Andosia, president of the AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) at andosjm@auburn.edu.
