Linguist to Lecture for Black History Celebration
On Wednesday, March 12, as part of Auburn University’s Black History Celebration, Dr. Lise Winer, a linguist at McGill University specializing in the language and literature Trinidad and Tobago, will speak at Pebble Hill at 7:00. Dr. Winer will talk on "Comprehension and Resonance: Creole Literature and English-speaking Readers." Among Dr. Winer’s publications are the Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago English/Creole and Varieties of English Around the World: Trinidad and Tobago. Coffee and dessert will follow Dr. Winer’s talk.

This event is free and open to Auburn students, staff, faculty, administration and the general public.

Dr. Winer will meet with linguistics classes on Thursday, March 13 in Haley Center 2350, from 9:30 to 12:00 to discuss her experiences editing the Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago English/Creole. Dr. Winer will also discuss the language varieties represented in two early 20th century newspaper columns.

Event sponsors include the Department of English, The College of Liberal Arts, and the Center for Diversity and Race Relations.

Poets (and Poetry Lovers) Wanted
All students, faculty, staff, and other friends of poetry are cordially invited to participate in the Haley Center Poetry Project for Spring 2003, sponsored by the Department of English, Sigma Tau Delta, and the AU Bookstore. The second of our twice-yearly poetry readings is scheduled for March 11 and 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day, and there will be opportunities for as many as fifty readers to take part in this public outdoor event, which will be held in the Haley Center courtyard (outside the AU Bookstore). Refreshments will be served!

Format will be similar to previous Poetry Projects, with each reader allotted about 10 minutes to read the poetry of their choice. Readers are welcome to read poetry from any time period and/or language, famous or obscure, old or new, soothing or provocative.

If you'd like to be a part of the Haley Center Poetry Project, you may sign up by e-mailing Prof. Jim Ryan or by adding your name to the list posted on the door at HC 8070. Noted Speaker to Lecture at Tuskegee

Dr. Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, a leader in the field of Disability Studies and an Associate Professor of Women's Studies at Emory University, will give a talk with slides, "Seeing the Disabled: Visual Rhetorics of Disability in Popular Photography," in the Kellogg Conference Center at Tuskegee University today, February 26, at 4:00 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by The College of Liberal Arts and Education, The Tuskegee University's Center for Continuing Education, the Bush Foundation Grant for Faculty Development, and The National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University.  For more information, consult The University of Tuskegee website.

Pebble Hill Programs
The Center for the Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill will host a number of authors and artists this semester.  Each presenter brings a unique social or historical significance to Auburn.  All programs begin at 4:00 p.m.  Please encourage your students to attend.  For further information, please contact the Center for the Arts and Humanities.

MTPC Exams
The oral comprehensive exams for MTPC students continues tomorrow, February 27.  The first part of the exam consists of the candidate presenting his or her portfolio to the examining committee, but is open to graduate students and graduate faculty.  The second part of the exam will cover the candidate's course work and research projects.  This part of the exam is open to graduate faculty.  The exam schedule follows:

English Department Announces Writing Awards
The English Department is pleased to announce its annual awards competition for excellence in student writing in each of the following categories: poetry, creative prose, and academic essay.  Submissions should be made to the Undergraduate Awards Box in 9030 Haley Center by Thursday, March 13, 2003, 4:45 p.m.  Winners will be recognized at the annual Benson Lecture on Thursday, April 24, 2003.

Technical and professional communication students and faculty members spent  last Wednesday at Mirant Corporation in Atlanta, GA, visiting with technical writers in the document team.  The group then attended the STC chapter meeting.
