Alabama State Senate Approves Trustee Appointments

Despite protests from students, faculty, and alumni, including an organized boycott of classes on Tuesday, February 20th, the Alabama State Senate approved Earlon McWhorter and Golda McDaniel to the Auburn University Board of Trustees. Mr. McWhorter was approved by a roll call vote of 28 to 6. Ms. McDaniel was confirmed by a vote of 21 to 12.
During the debate, Senator Lowell Barron, a member of the Board of Trustees, refused to answer directly questions from Senator J. T. Waggoner, who asked if he thought there was an image problem with the Board of Trustees. Instead, Barron replied that he "loved Auburn." Even though the Senate Gallery was packed (capacity 122) with students, faculty, and alumni, with many more students standing outside in the hallways, Barron [under]estimated the number of people who were "upset" with the Board of Trustees at one percent of the student population.
