Isabelle Thompson Awarded Essay Prize

One of Isabelle Thompson's articles, "Women and Feminism in Technical Communication: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Journal Articles Published in 1989 through 1997," won the 2000 NCTE Award for the Best Article Reporting Historical Research or Textual Studies in Technical or Scientific Communication. Congratulations!

The English Department congratulates Isabelle Thompson, who was recently promoted to Professor, and Jon Bolton who was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor.

Nominations Sought for Phi Kappa Phi Awards

Faculty members are encouraged to nominate outstanding students for awards to be made by the local chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. The Susan Stacy Entrekin Yakes Award for juniors ($5,000) will be evenly divided among the winners; the L. M. Ware Award for $500 will be presented to one senior; and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award for $500 will be presented to one senior in the humanities.
These awards are not scholarships, but awards presented to students who have demonstrated academic excellence to use as they desire.
With the change to semesters, the deadline for nominations has been moved up considerably to Thursday, February 15, 2001. Forms may be picked up from Tim Dykstal (HC 9092). Please consider nominating deserving English majors.

AAUP Schedules Forum on Selecting a University President

The Auburn Chapter of the American Association of University Professors is sponsoring an open forum on the topic of "Stakeholders' Participation in the Selection of University Administrators." The forum aims to educate both faculty and the governing board about the joint responsibilities of shared governance. Scheduled speakers include Jack Venable from the Board of Trustees, Associate Professor Larry Gerber (History), Secretary/Treasurer of the Alabama Conference of the AAUP, and Professor Eugene Clothiaux (Physics), a former chair of the University Senate (and who also served on the search committee that brought William V. Muse to Auburn).
The forum, free and open to the public, is scheduled for Friday, March 2, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. in Tichenor 206. All--including faculty whom columnist Paul Davis labels "apathetic" and "silent"--are invited to attend and participate in the discussion.
For more information about the AAUP, please contact
George Crandell.

On Monday, February 19, 2001, Joyce Rothschild and Pat Morrow will be traveling to Montgomery where he'll be delivering a guest lecture on the way that Scott Fitzgerald and Pat have been shadowing each other through the last century. The title of the presentation is "Scott, Marilyn, Scottie, then Patrick and Beyond." First there will be anecdotal reminiscences about Pat's family and F. Scott, then the story "Absolution" and The Great Gatsby. The course is being conducted at AUM by Dr. Anne Little, Pat's former student at Auburn, who now has authored a pair of books.
