Atkins named Burkhardt Award Winner

natalie atkins

Natalie Atkins has been named the Varian C. Burkhardt Award Winner. Natalie is a second-year MA student with a creative writing emphasis. Her interests are poetry and creative non-fiction, and she also has a new interest in fiction writing.

Each summer or fall the Graduate Studies Committee acknowledges that MA student who has compiled the best first-year academic record.

Varian Carpenter Burkhardt, a long-time resident of Auburn, taught English in her native Washington and also wrote, under the pen name Varian Feare.  In her memory, her children established this annual award to recognize that rising second-year MA student whose academic record during his or her first year is the most outstanding in that entering class.

A monetary gift of $600 goes with the Burkhardt Award.

In addition, the name of the Burkhardt Award winner will be engraved on a plaque in the departmental office, and that person is publicly recognized as the Burkhardt Award recipient in the English Channel and at the Annual Spring English Department Reception.
