Newsworthy: Jana Gutierrez to Lead World Literature Faculty Seminar
Jana Gutierrez, Assistant Professor of Spanish at Auburn University, will lead the "World Literature Faculty Seminar: Teaching Latin American and US Hispanic Works in World Literature II." The seminar will be held October 23, 3-5 PM in Haley Center 3104.
Roald Hoffmann to Present "One Culture"
The Littleton-Franklin Lectures in Science and Humanities and the College of Science and Mathematics present Roald Hoffman. He will give a lecture, "One Culture," on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, at 4 PM in the COSAM Science Auditorium, Roosevelt Drive, Campus.
Roald Hoffmann is a 1981 Nobel Prize-winning chemist, a poet, a playwright, a philosopher, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and The American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was born in Zloczow, Poland in 1937 to Clara and Hillel Safran. During Europe's darkest years, the family went to a ghetto and then to a labor camp from which Roald and his mother escaped. His father was killed by the Nazis. In 1962 Hoffmann received his Ph. D. in chemistry at Harvard University. Dr. Hoffmann has had a special interest in literature since he was a college student. He is well known for his play "O2 Oxygen" about the discovery of oxygen and the nature of discovery in science. Hoffmann's second play "Should've" explores the social responsibilities of scientists and artists in society. Professor Hoffmann has been on the faculty at Cornell University since 1965 where he is now the Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and Professor of Chemistry.
Peter Huggins's Picture Book Chosen for PBS Kid's Show
Peter Huggins's picture book, Trosclair and the Alligator, has been picked to appear on the PBS kids' show Between the Lions. In addition, Trosclair and the Alligator has been nominated for an International Reading Association Children's Book Award, an Ezra Jack Keats Award from the New York Public Library, and a Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. His novel for middle grade readers, In the Company of Owls, is forthcoming in Spring 2007 from NewSouth Books.
