Newsworthy: Michelle Sidler Awarded Funds for English Department
Michelle Sidler, for the English Department, through the College of Liberal Arts, was awarded a $130,000 grant from the Provost's General Fund for Equipment to establish two new wireless computer classrooms to support critical thinking, writing, and reading. The classrooms will be equipped with wireless technology, collaboration-friendly furniture, and convertible notebook computers that can be used either as a laptop or as a tablet PC. Students can take notes directly onto the computers, perform groupwork around round tables, and share drafts with ease.
Bert Hitchcock Participates as Scholar for Hellman-Wyler Festival
Bert Hitchcock is a participating scholar for the Hellman-Wyler Festival, a public humanities program in March in Birmingham and Demopolis, Alabama, with events that focus on the achievements of Lillian Hellman's dramas and William Wyler's accomplishments in film-making while highlighting the Alabama connections and collaborations of the two.
In addition to his participation with the festival, Dr. Hitchcock wrote the introduction to a reprint edition of the satirical 1874 book Down the River; Or, Practical Lessons Under the Code Duello, published by the University of Alabama Press.
Graduate Student Research Colloquium to Be Held March 10
The graduate student Research Colloquium will be held Saturday, March 10, in Haley Center in various rooms of the 3100 quadrant. The first two panels will be held from 10:50 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and the afternoon sessions will finish around 4:30 p.m. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served. Everyone is invited to attend.
Alumna Jessica Lyn Van Slooten Accepts Position
Jessica Lyn Van Slooten (PhD 2003) has accepted a tenure-track position at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc, where she'll teach American literature and composition courses.
