Newsworthy: English Graduate Organization Concludes Successful Semester

The final meeting of the English Graduate Organization for the Fall semester is Thursday, November 10 at 5 pm in HC 8009.

One of EGO's major accomplishments during this semester was the addition of two new EGO Conference Travel Awards ($100 each) that have already been approved by Dr. Crandell. Any graduate student who has attended or who will be attending a conference that is not already funded by the department is encouraged to submit an abstract, the time and place of the conference, and a list of expected expenses. Remember to keep receipts up to $100.

In addition, EGO is excited to announce that the EGO T-shirt has been approved and will be ready for purchase before Christmas. The price of the shirt is still being negotiated.

The final Fall meeting will include discussion of the organization's goals for the upcoming Spring semester. A few items on the November 10 meeting agenda include:

  • Spring semester EGO elections. Anyone who is interested in campaigning for next year's EGO positions should attend the meeting and talk to this year's officers to find out about their duties. EGO will be creating ad hoc committees for several functions, and the organization needs new leaders from its membership.
  • New EGO award for Best Conference Paper. EGO is currently working on generating interest about this award as well as discussing whether or not monetary incentives will accompany the award. The organization is excited at the prospect of continuing to encourage all graduate students in their endeavors to professionalize themselves through attendance and/or participation at conferences in their fields.

All graduate students are encouraged to attend the final EGO meeting of Fall semester on November 10.

November 9 - Deadline for Teaching Excellence Award Nominations

The Auburn Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Awards. Students, alumni, and others are invited to submit nominations for professors who have made an impact on their lives. Recipients of the award will receive $1,000 and a plaque at the recognition reception in early 2006.

Please submit your nominations to George Crandell by Wednesday, November 9 at 4:40 pm.

To nominate a teacher or support a nomination made by someone else, each nominator should send a letter explaining how the teacher is exceptional. In the letter, consider the following:

  • the quality of the teaching performance (i.e. good lecturer)
  • knowledge of subject
  • interest in students and availability to them
  • impact on the nominator's personal educational experience
  • influence within Auburn University (i.e. number of courses taught, committee assignments, etc.)

A letter of support from the nominee's dean and/or department head must accompany the letters of nomination. Other letters of support from colleagues are welcome, but greatest emphasis will be placed on letters from students and alumni. The nominator's name, address, phone number and email address should be included with the nomination.

If you have any questions about the awards or the nomination process, call 844-2586 or visit the Alumni website.
