Newsworthy: Open House for Alumni - 3 pm - HC 9030
The Department of English will host an Open House for alumni Friday, September 30 in 9030 Haley Center. Faculty and students in the English Department are invited to stop by to meet members of the newly formed Advisory Council and visiting alumni.
Recently the Department sent out postcards asking for updated information on alumni. Among the many recent respondents are:

James O. Turnipseed is 92-years-old, graduated in 1938, and taught English for 43 years

Sarah Margaret Hamilton, a 1999 graduate, is now a public relations specialist for Turner Broadcasting Systems in Atlanta

1977 graduate Timothy John Lockhart is hoping to publish his first novel, a private-eye mystery

Candace Higginbotham Schlosser, who graduated in 1989, is managing editor of Cottage Living, a Southern Progress magazine

Michael Lee McCollum, a 2002 graduate, works for the online department of Warren Miller Interactive and is also interning at the Denver Post

1969 graduate Gail Hunter Yates works in Development for the Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University

TODAY - Professorial Faculty Meeting - 3 pm - HC 3104
A professorial faculty meeting is scheduled for today -- Wednesday, September 28 -- at 3 pm in HC 3104. The topic of the meeting will be assessment.
October 1 - Tailgate Party
The College of Liberal Arts will host a tailgate party Saturday, October 1 before the Auburn-South Carolina game. Live music and free food will be provided.
The event will start 2 hours before the game (at 4 pm) in the Dean's Club parking lot on the corner of Duncan and Samford next to the Telfair Peet Theater. For more information, contact Wendy Bonner at 844-1483.
October 3 - English Hour - "God and the Classroom: Teaching Religious Texts in the Heart of Dixie" - 3:30 pm - HC 3104
Phillip Beard and James Truman will be running a panel discussion on engaging with theological and religious matters in the classroom, particularly in the World Literature classroom.
The discussion will be from 3 to 5 pm in Haley 3104. Any member of the Department interested in participating should contact Phillip Beard or James Truman.
October 4, 5 - Haley Center Poetry Project 2005 - 10 am to 2 pm - Haley Center Courtyard
All students, faculty, staff, and other friends of poetry are cordially invited to participate in the Haley Center Poetry Project for Fall 2005, sponsored by the Department of English, Sigma Tau Delta, the English Club, and the AU Bookstore.
This semester, readings are scheduled for October 4 and 5, from 10 am to 2 pm each day. There will be opportunities for as many as 50 readers to take part in this public outdoor event, which will be held in the Haley Center courtyard (outside the AU Bookstore). As always, refreshments will be served.
The format will be similar to previous Poetry Projects; each reader will be allotted about 10 minutes to read the poetry of her or his choice. Readers are welcome to read poetry from any time period and/or language, famous or obscure, old or new, original or shamelessly imitative.
If you'd like to be a reader in the Haley Center Poetry Project, please indicate your interest by calling Jim Ryan at 844-9092, by email to Jim Ryan or Chris Forhan, or by signing the lists posted outside HC 9092.
October 5 - Judy Troy Presents "My Southern Story " - 4 pm - JCS Museum Auditorium
Judy Troy, Alumni Writer in Residence in the Department of English, is presenting a talk, "My Southern Story,” at 4 pm, October 5 in the Auditorium of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.
This presentation is the first in the 2005-2006 College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series, sponsored by the CLA Dean's Advisory Council. A reception will follow.

October 12 - "Not Just Desserts" series presents Sally O'Driscoll - Noon - RBD Auditorium
"Word on the Street:18th-Century Pamphlets and the Language of Gender," a talk by Sally O'Driscoll of Fairfield University will be given as part of the "Not Just Desserts" series at noon, October 12, in the RBD library auditorium. The visit is sponsored by the Center for Diversity and Race Relations, the RBD Library, Women's Studies, the Stevens Fund, and the Gay and Lesbian Caucus.
October 15 - Call for Graduate Student Essay Submissions
Blackwell Publisher's new online journal and reference resource, Literature Compass, invites submissions for the graduate essay prize. Prizes will be awarded to essays in each of nine literature sections. Each section winner will receive $200 of free Blackwell books and have their article published on Literature Compass.
The deadline for submissions is October 15. For details about the contest and the kinds of essays they are seeking, visit their web site.
October 19 - Department Faculty Meeting - 3 pm - HC 3104
A Department faculty meeting is scheduled for October 19 at 3 pm in HC 3104.
The topic of the meeting is a workshop on the Americans with Disabilities Act and Sexual Harassment. All new faculty and GTAs are expected to attend.
Attendance is strongly recommended for all faculty and GTAs who have not attended the workshop in the last two years. It is especially important to be familiar with policies regarding the ADA and Sexual Harassment and to be aware of changes in these policies.
November 9 - Teaching Excellence Award Nominations
The Auburn Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Awards. Students, alumni, and others are invited to submit nominations for professors who have made an impact on their lives. Recipients of the award will receive $1,000 and a plaque at the recognition reception in early 2006. Please submit your nominations to George Crandell by Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 4:40 pm.
To nominate a teacher or support a nomination made by someone else, each nominator should send a letter explaining how the teacher is exceptional. In the letter, consider the following:
- the quality of the teaching performance (i.e. good lecturer)
- knowledge of subject
- interest in students and availability to them
- impact on the nominator's personal educational experience
- influence within Auburn University (i.e. number of courses taught, committee assignments, etc.)
A letter of support from the nominee's dean and/or department head must accompany the letters of nomination. Other letters of support from colleagues are welcome, but greatest emphasis will be placed on letters from students and alumni. The nominator's name, address, phone number and email address should be included with the nomination.

English Department Phone System Updated
Department telephones now take messages!
You do not need to do anything to set up the message system. The current message lets the caller know the phone number dialed and gives instructions for leaving a message.
To access your Voice Mail and retrieve your messages, press #88. You will be asked for your mailbox number and password. Your mailbox number is 4XXXX# and your password is 4XXXX# (XXXX = the last four digits of your office phone number).

Graduate School Forms Must be Viewed with Internet Explorer
All Internet forms that graduate students are required to complete for the Graduate School must be viewed using Internet Explorer.
To open Internet Explorer in the Department work areas (HC 8011, 8097, 9007, 9009):

A reminder has been placed on each monitor in the Department work areas.
