Jack Selzer, Professor of English and Associate Dean for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies at Penn State University, will discuss rhetorical criticism at the first English Symposium Series lecture of the 2005-2006 academic year at 2 pm in the RBD Library auditorium.

Taking advantage of what he has learned from research on Kenneth Burke, professor Selzer will first outline an approach to rhetorical criticism and then show how that approach can "open up" texts as various as a novel by John Dos Passos, an argument in the Wall Street Journal, a speech from the Civil Rights movement, and a visual argument about gender.

Donations for Katrina Relief - HC 8009

A gray plastic container has been placed in Haley 8009 to receive any donations of goods you might be able to give for Hurricane Katrina relief. The items will be taken to Parkway Baptist Church, which is sending trucks to some of the affected areas. The church has already successfully delivered supplies to Petal, Miss., and Sims, Ala. A truck is scheduled to travel this week (probably Friday) to Bayou LaBatrie, La., an especially hard-hit area with a very large poor population.

Some of the items needed include:

  • Water: Individual bottles or larger containers; any sort of water-sterilizing apparatus.
  • Non-perishable food items: Baby formula, baby food, powdered milk, powdered gatorade, canned goods with self-opening lids (tinned meats, soups, vienna's, fruit), dried beans, and bleach (plain, no additives, for sterilizing water).
  • Paper/plastic goods: Diapers, toilet tissue, paper towels, paper plates, plastic silverware.
  • Hygiene and toiletry items: Toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, etc.
  • Clothes: Boxed and separated men's, women's, and children's clothes; new underwear.
  • Miscellaneous: Lighters, flashlights, can openers, batteries, matches, bedding and linens, towels, cooking utensils, gas cans (Big Need), hand trucks, and ice chests.
