Newsworthy: 2005-2006 Department Events
Here is an initial list of Department events for the 2005-2006 calendar year. Please mark your calendars and send us events to add to the list. Plans for faculty meetings, English Hours, EGO meetings, English Symposium Series, and more will be posted as soon as they are available. Check the CALENDAR link off the department's homepage and the English Channel for upcoming events and details.

August 1-5, 8-12 - New Faculty Orientation

The first meeting day for new faculty will be Wednesday, August 3, at 9 am in 3124 Haley Center.

August 10-12 - New Graduate Student Orientation

New graduate students will attend their first meeting on Wednesday, August 10, at 9 am in 3104 Haley Center.

August 12 - Lead Teacher/Co-Teacher Workshop - 9 am in 3104 Haley Center

Lead teachers and co-teachers will meet on Friday, August 12, from 9 am until noon in 3104 Haley Center.

August 16 - Department Meeting and Reception - 11 am in 3195 Haley Center

All members of the Department (faculty, staff, and graduate students) should attend the Department meeting on Tuesday, August 16, at 11 am in 3195 Haley Center. A reception will follow the meeting in 9030 Haley Center.

August 16 - 2nd-Year Masters GTA Workshop - 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center

2nd-year Masters GTAs will participate in a workshop on Tuesday, August 16, at 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center.

August 17 - Classes Begin

Auburn University classes begin on Wednesday, August 17.

August 17 - World Literature Workshop - 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center

PhD GTAs and instructors teaching World Literature should attend the workshop on Wednesday, August 17, at 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center.

August 20 - Department Picnic - 4 pm at Chewacla State Park

All members of the department, alum, and their friends are invited to attend a Department picnic on Saturday, August 20, from 4 pm until dusk at Chewacla State Park. This event will be hosted by George and Carolyn Crandell.

September 11 - Quilts of Gee's Bend Opening at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

The Quilts of Gee's Bend will be exhibited at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art during the Fall semester. This event opens on Sunday, September 11.

September 19 - English Symposium Series - Jack Selzer

Jack Selzer of Penn State University will discuss the rhetorical criticism at the first English Symposium Series lecture of the 2005-2006 calendar year. Time and location TBA.

October 1 - College of Liberal Arts Tailgate Party

Auburn versus South Carolina.

College of Liberal Arts Tailgate Party: Meet 2 hours before kickoff at the Dean's Club Parking Lot on the corner of Duncan & Samford.

October 4 and 5 - Haley Center Poetry Project

The sixth annual Haley Center Poetry Project will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 4 and 5, in the Haley Center Courtyard.

October 20 - English Symposium Series - Thomas Lux - 3 pm at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

The poet Thomas Lux will present the second lecture in the English Symposium Series on Thursday, October 20, at 3 pm at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

November 7 - World Literature Lecture - Sheldon Pollock

The World Literature program will sponsor a lecture by Sheldon Pollock, William B. Ransford Professor of Sanskrit and South Asian Studies Columbia University, Monday, November 7, 2005. He will meet with students and faculty throughout the day.

December 7 - Last Day of Classes

AU classes end Wednesday, December 7.

December 8 - End-of-Term Party and Pot Luck Dinner - TBA

The Department's end-of-term party and pot luck dinner will be held on Thursday, December 8, at 6 pm Location TBA.

January 5, 2006 - Lead Teacher/Co-Teacher Workshop - 9:30 am in 3104 Haley Center

Lead teachers and co-teachers will meet on Thursday, January 5 from 9:30 am until noon in 3104 Haley Center.

January 9, 2006 - Classes Begin

The first day of classes for the Spring semester is Monday, January 9, 2006.

March - English Symposium Series - Janisse Ray

Janisse Ray, an environmental writer, will be the English Symposium Series lecturer in March 2006. Date, time, and location TBA.

March 18 - Graduate Student Colloquium

EGO plans to build on the success of the April 2005 Colloquium. Watch the English Channel for details.

April 8 - April in Auburn

The seventh annual meeting of the Birmingham Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication and AU faculty, students, and alum.

April 20 - English Symposium Series and Carl Benson Lecture on 20th Century Literature- James Phelan - 3 pm at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

James Phelan of Ohio State University will discuss narrative theory at the English Symposium Series and Benson Lecture on Thursday, April 20, at 3 pm at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

April 27-29 - Southeastern Conference on Linguistics

The Southeastern Conference on Linguistics will hold its annual conference at Auburn University on April 27-29. John Joseph, University of Edinburgh, will give a lecture on applied linguistics.

Late April - Alumni and Awards Celebration

The Alumni and Awards Celebration will be held in late April 2006. Date, time, and location TBA.

May 1 - Classes End

AU classes end on Monday, May 1.

The Quilts of Gee's Bend in Context - Using the Quilts in Your Classroom
The Quilts of Gee's Bend exhibit opens September 11, and the faculty involved in the Quilts of Gee's Bend in Context research project hope you will consider taking a class to the museum and or incorporating a lesson on the quilts in your classes in the fall.

Please visit the research project's website to learn about the exhibit and particularly visit the page on "Teaching the Quilts." There you will find bibliography of texts that may tie into your courses in the fall, history and geography, links, and images of the quilts. This site will be updated throughout the summer so please visit it again before we resume classes in the fall. If you have any questions about the site or any feedback please contact Alicia Carroll.

Recycling in Haley Center Offices
Haley Center offices will become part of the Auburn University recycling program this fall. Two wastebaskets will be in your office.

Use the wastebasket with a clear bag to recycle:

paper magazines
mixed paper cardboard
file folders aluminum
newspaper plastic - #1 and #2
phonebooks steel

-> Please rinse the aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
-> Remove papers clips and binder clips.
-> Remove sticky notes.

Use the smaller true trash bin for all other materials.

To include an item in The English Channel, submit text items by Tuesday at 11:40 am for publication Wednesday. Submit items by email to Sean Wells or Betsy Smith or put the information in their mailbox. Please check your submission for accuracy and completion—all calendar items and meeting announcements must include the date, time, and location of the event.
