Newsworthy: April in Auburn
The Department and the Birmingham Chapter of the Society of Technical Communication (STC) will host the 7th annual April in Auburn meeting on April 8 from 9 am to 2 pm in Haley Center. An optional tour of the new Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art at Auburn University is scheduled for 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
This year's meeting will focus on practical sessions for professionals and will feature presentations by several Department of English faculty members. The schedule for April in Auburn will be:
- Registration, HC 3106 (donuts, Danish, and coffee), 9 to 9:20 am
- Welcome and Introductions, HC 3104, 9:30 to 9:40 am
- New Industry Standards for Website Design, HC 3116, 9:40-10:30 am, presented by Jason Kneip, Librarian II, Archives and Special Collections, Auburn University-Montgomery and Michelle Sidler, Assistant Professor, Department of English. This session will cover the emerging standards of web style sheets, including how they change web page design, which web software works best with them, and the benefits and disadvantages of using them. Then, the participants will break into small groups for brief introductory exercises in creating and editing a style sheet.
- Break, 10:30 to 10:45 am
- Editing Workshop, HC 3104, 10:45 am to 12 pm, presented by Joyce Rothschild, Coordinator, Technical and Professional Communication Program, and Assistant Professor, Department of English. This session will review the up-to-date standards governing hyphenation, spelling, and comma use; use of the Chicago Manual and the AP Stylebook; and how to create practical style sheets for the workplace. Then participants will gather in small groups for some exercises in substantive editing and copyediting.
- Lunch, 12 to 1 pm, HC 3106 (provided by the Department of English, Auburn University); Birmingham STC Chapter business meeting
- Best Practices in Document Design, HC 3104, 1-1:50 pm, presented by Keith Gibson, Assistant Professor, Department of English. This session will begin by discussing the needs and expectations of our readers, including how these expectations shape the documents we create. We will then cover a series of document design principles that will make our documents more effective, and we will apply these principles to some actual documents to see how they work in practice.
- Optional Tour of the Julie Collins Smith Museum of Art at Auburn University, 2:30 to 3:30 pm. A docent will lead our group through the special collections of the art museum, which is located on South College Street, convenient to I-85 exit 51. The $5 admission fee will be covered for April in Auburn attendees.
The meeting is held every April on Auburn's campus, giving students and STC members a chance to meet and interact while providing students with a network-friendly environment. Students also traditionally display their portfolios, allowing for valuable feedback from attending professionals.
The registration fee is $15 for STC members and $25 for non-STC members. There is no registration fee for students or presenters, but all attending must register. All proceeds go to the Donald H. Cunningham Scholarship fund.
Register for the program online at birminghamstc.org, so that we may order the appropriate number of lunches. Lunch and refreshments are provided courtesy of the Auburn University Department of English.
