Newsworthy: Barbara Mowat - English SympoBarbara Mowatsium Series Lecture
Alum Barbara Mowat (BS, PhD), Director of Academic Programs at the Folger Shakespeare Library will give a lecture on Thursday, October 21, at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Mowat's lecture is entitled "Shakespeare's Reading/Reading Shakespeare."

Dr. Mowat earned both a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a doctorate in English from Auburn University and served as an English Department faculty member and editor of the Southern Humanities Review. She was also a founding member of the Ascent of Man program, now called the Human Odyssey.

Mowat will also be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa as a distinguished alum. In addition, she will meet with informal gatherings of students and faculty throughout the day in the English Department.

As part of the Department of English Symposium Series for 2004-2005, Mowat's lecture is also co-sponsored by the Department of History, Phi Beta Kappa, the College of Liberal Arts, the Herzfeld Lecture Fund, and the Auburn University Lectures Committee.

Fifth Annual Haley Center Poetry Project - OctobHaley Center Poetry Projecter 20 and 21 - 10 am to 2 pm
All students, faculty, staff, and other friends of poetry are cordially invited to attend the Haley Center Poetry Project for Fall 2004, scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm today and tomorrow, October 20 and 21.

As many as fifty readers will have the opportunity to take part in this public outdoor event, which will be held in the Haley Center courtyard (outside the AU Bookstore). Refreshments will be served!

Faculty are invited to bring their classes to attend the Poetry Project on either day, or to spend part of the lunch hour listening to some of our readers.

The Poetry Project is sponsored by the Department of English, Sigma Tau Delta, and the AU Bookstore.

EGO Panel - Applying to PhD Programs - Today - October 20 - 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center
EGO will offer a panel discussion about the application process for PhD programs today, Wednesday, October 20, at 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center. This event will replace the GTA practicum usually held at that time.

Those who are currently working on applications and would like guidance from both students and faculty and those who are considering applying to PhD programs are welcome to attend this event.

A panel of current PhD students and faculty members will discuss how to approach the application process, and there will be time to workshop some of your application materials. Frank Walters will also be there to offer advice on how to present yourself as a strong candidate for GTA positions.

"Literature After Dark" - Slamnation - Tonight - October 20- 7:45 pm in 3195 Haley Center
Slamnation will be shown tonight, October 20, at 7:45 pm in 3195 Haley Center as part of the fall season of "Literature After Dark." This documentary, which examines the powerful world of the poetry slam phenomenon, stars Saul Williams.

EGO Teacher Talk Roundtable - October 26 - 2 pm in 8009 Haley Center
EGO will sponsor the first "Teacher Talk Roundtable" on Tuesday, October 26, from 2 to 3 pm in 8009 Haley Center. This session will be loosely centered on "Dealing with Problem Students."

All teachers are invited to attend this informal event and to share their experiences with their peers.

ABD Colloquium - "Publishing an Article: The Protocols of the Process" - October 27 - 3:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center
The ABD Colloquium will sponsor a panel discussion/conversation entitled "Publishing an Article: The Protocols of the Process" on Wednesday, October 27, at 3:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center.

At the session, panelists Jon Bolton, Margaret Kouidis, Shawna Thorp Lichtenwalner, Jim Ryan, Michelle Sidler, and Hilary Wyss will discuss how to get your brilliant article published and how to endure the agony, periods of disappointment, and attention to picky details that the process entails.

War Eagle American Indian Festival - October 29, 30, and 31
Auburn University's third annual War Eagle American Indian Festival will be held on October 29, 30, and 31. To celebrate the history and culture of South Eastern Indigenous Peoples, this festival will feature traditional singers, musicians, dancers, artisans, food, and living history campsites.

The festival will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, October 29, (Children's Day) and Saturday, October 30, on the grounds of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. On Sunday, October 31, a workshop and four presentations will be held from 1 to 5 pm at the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. Admission is free to all events.
