Newsworthy: Fifth Annual Haley Center Poetry Project - October 20 and 21 - 10 am to 2 pm Haley Center Poetry Project
All students, faculty, staff, and other friends of poetry are cordially invited to participate in the Haley Center Poetry Project for Fall 2004, scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm on October 20 and 21. The Poetry Project is sponsored by the Department of English, Sigma Tau Delta, and the AU Bookstore.

As many as fifty readers will have the opportunity to take part in this public outdoor event, which will be held in the Haley Center courtyard (outside the AU Bookstore). Refreshments will be served!

Each reader will be allotted about 10 minutes to read the poetry of their choice. As always, readers are welNick Boone at the Poetry Projectcome to read poetry from any time period: famous or obscure, old or new, soothing or provocative. Readers may read from their own poetry or from poetry written by others, whether previously published or not. Poetry in languages other than English is also welcome.

Faculty are invited to bring their classes to attend the Poetry Project on either day, or to spend part of the lunch hour listening to some of our readers.

If you'd like to be a part of the Haley Center Poetry Project, please sign up as soon as possible by e-mail to Jim Ryan or by adding your name to the list posted on the door at HC 8070.

Creative/Research Forum - Derrick Spradlin - Today - October 13 - 12 pm in 8009 Haley Center
A creative/research forum will be held today, October 13, with Derrick Spradlin presenting. The brown-bag lunch session will be held at 12 pm in 8009 Haley Center.

Teaching and Learning Forum - Today - October 13 - 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center
Supporting the efforts of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning and the College of Liberal Arts' PETL (Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning) Committee, the Department of English is sponsoring a Teaching and Learning Forum today, Wednesday, October 13, from 3 to 4:30 pm in 3104 Haley Center.

From 3 to 3:40 pm, the focus of the open forum discussion will be the English major. After a brief break at 3:40 pm, participants will be invited to form into smaller groups to discuss expectations related to more specific teaching and learning interests (e.g., subject area specializations). Refreshments will be provided.

EGO Meeting - Today - October 13 - 3:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center
The English Graduate Organization (EGO) will hold a meeting today, October 13, from 3:15 to 4:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center. All graduate students in English are welcome to attend.

CLA PETL Presentation - October 14 - 3:30 pm in 2370 Haley Center
The College of Liberal Arts Promotion of Excellence in Teaching and Learning will hold its first presentation on Thursday, October 14, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in 2370 Haley Center. Dr. Jim Groccia, Director of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, will give a lecture on "How to Engage Your Students."

All faculty and graduate teaching assistants are encouraged to attend.

EGO Panel - Applying to PhD Programs - October 20 - 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center
EGO will offer a panel discussion about the application process for PhD programs on Wednesday, October 20, at 1 pm in 3104 Haley Center. This event will replace the GTA practicum usually held at that time.

Those who are currently working on applications and would like guidance from both students and faculty and those who are considering applying to PhD programs are welcome to attend this panel.

English Symposium Series - Barbara Mowat - October 21 Barbara Mowatt- Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art
Alum Barbara Mowat (PhD), Director of Academic Programs at the Folger Shakespeare Library will present the second lecture of the English Symposium Series on Thursday, October 21 at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Mowat's talk will be on Shakespeare's reading, that is, his use of previously published material in his works and the implications of their intertextual nature.

ABD Colloquium - "Publishing an Article: The Protocols of the Process" - October 27 - 3:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center
The ABD Colloquium will sponsor a panel discussion/conversation entitled "Publishing an Article: The Protocols of the Process" on Wednesday, October 27, at 3:15 pm in 8009 Haley Center.

At the session, panelists Jon Bolton, Margaret Kouidis, Shawna Thorp Lichtenwalner, Jim Ryan, Michelle Sidler, and Hilary Wyss will discuss how to get your brilliant article published and how to endure the agony, periods of disappointment, and attention to picky details that the process entails.
