Isabelle Thompson Appointed Faculty Fellow Associate Director of Biggio Center Isabelle Thompson
Isabelle Thompson, professor and Coordinator of the English Center, has been appointed a Faculty Fellow Associate Director of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Auburn University. Thompson will serve a 3 year term in this position.

Two other Auburn University faculty members, Bill Buskist, psychology professor, and Don Mulvaney, animal sciences professor, will also serve as Faculty Fellow Associate Directors.

As a Faculty Fellow Associate Director, Thompson will focus her work on assessment for the Biggio Center, encouraging communication across the disciplines, and beginning a book club for Auburn University faculty and graduate students. This fall, the book club will discuss Ernest L. Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate. For more information about the book club, please contact the Biggio Center.

Faculty Meeting Today - September 8 - 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center
A faculty meeting will be held today, September 8, at 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center. A discussion will be held regarding the long-term planning process and the survey results for the English Department.

Literature After Dark Tonight - September 8 - Note Time Change
The Piano (1993), the second film in the fall season of "Literature After Dark," will be shown tonight, September 8, at 7:45 pm in 3195 Haley Center. This film, a tale of a woman's struggle and growth in mid-nineteenth century New Zealand, stars Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel.

College of Liberal Arts Reception - Tonight - September 8
The College of Liberal Arts invites all faculty and staff of the College to a reception to celebrate the new academic year. The reception will be held tonight, September 8, from 5 to 7:30 pm at The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

Biggio Center Professional Development Seminar - September 9
The Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Auburn University will continue its Professional Development Seminar Series on Thursday, September 9. All Auburn University and PFF Cluster Institution faculty and graduate students are invited to attend.

Seminars will be held in Foy 202 and start with refreshments at noon. Participants are asked to bring their own lunches; beverages and cookies will be provided. Nick Backscheider, Associate Executive Director, OIT will begin his presentation, "Teaching with Technology," at 12:15 pm.

New Directions '04 Faculty Retreat - September 11
The faculty retreat, New Directions 'O4, will be held on Saturday, September 11, from 8:30 am to 1 pm at Keisel Park. A map of Keisel Park can be found online.

The retreat will continue the discussion from the September 8th faculty meeting and look toward the future status of the English Department in 2006 and 2012.

Materials contributing to these topics include chapters 2 and 8 from Bill Reading's The University in Ruins and Andrew Doyle's article, "'Fighting Whiskey and Immortality' at Auburn: The Politics of Southern Football, 1919-1927." These materials have been placed in faculty mailboxes.

EGO Meet and Greet Party - September 11
The English Graduate Organization (EGO) will hold its first social event of the year on Saturday, September 11, from 7 to 11 pm at PhD co-chair Robin Bates' house. All new and returning graduate students are encouraged to attend and asked to bring a snack to share and their own beverages. For directions, please contact Bates.

Job Placement Informational Meeting for Graduate Students and Instructors - September 14
All graduate students and instructors are invited to attend an informational meeting regarding job placement on Tuesday, September 14, at 4 pm in 8009 Haley Center. Information about the job search can also be found on the English Department's graduate program website. For questions, please contact Margaret Kouidis or Kathryn Pratt.

A faculty meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 22, at 3 pm in 3104 Haley Center. This meeting will be held to discuss assessment within the department.

English Symposium Series 2004-2005 - James Buzzard Lecture - September 23
The first English Symposium Series lecture offers faculty, students, alumni, and members of the community the chance to listen to and meet speakers known for their accomplishments in the arts and humanities.

James Buzzard, Associate Professor of English at MIT, will present the first lecture of the 2004-2005 series on Thursday, September 23, at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Buzzard specializes in 19th-Century British Literature. He has authored The Beaten Track: European Tourism, Literature, and the Way to "Culture" and Anywhere's Nowhere: Fictions of Autoethnography in the United Kingdom (forthcoming).

The Auburn Circle Call for SubmissioThe Auburn Circle, Spring 2004 Issuens - Deadline September 24
Auburn University's literary magazine, The Auburn Circle, is accepting submissions for the Fall 2004 publication until Friday, September 24. This publication, which will be distributed on Wednesday, November 17, accepts creative submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, artwork, photography, and design. MTPC Oral Exam - Christopher Miller - September 28 - 3:30 pm - 3130 Haley Center
Second-year Master of Technical and Professional Communication (MTPC) student Christopher Miller will present materials from his portfolio and coursework on Tuesday, September 28, in 3130 Haley Center at 3:30 pm.

MTPC students fulfill their degree requirements by completing an oral exam and portfolio presentation. During the oral exam, students present many of the documents they have created in their MTPC classes and that appear in their portfolios. Students also incorporate information from their course readings and discussions into their presentations.

Members of the student's advisory committee conduct the oral exam. Department members and guests are invited to attend and ask questions.

Online Resource, The Literature Compass, Available through September
The Literature Compass, a Blackwell Publishers resource for British and American literature of all periods, will be available online for free through September. James Goldstein is a member of the editorial board and welcomes comments about this online resource.

Historic Photo Exhibition by Dr. Michele Ronnick
Auburn University's Center for Diversity and Race Relations presents Dr. Michele Ronnick's historic photo exhibition in Foy Student Union's Exhibit Lounge (room 217). Ronnick's photos feature African-American classical scholars such as William Sanders Scarborough, Lewis Baxter Moore, John Wesley Gilbert, William Henry Crogman, and Edward Wilmot Blyden.

The exhibit will be open to the public from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday until September 16.
