Welcome New Graduate Students
The English Department welcomes all new gr
aduate students entering the MA, MTPC, and PhD programs.
Joining the MA program are Stephanie Bogle, Milla Chappell, Timothy (Joel) Conway, Barrett Gaines, Sarah Godwin, Naoko Haramiishi, James (Daniel) Hasty, Jared Hromadka, John Lucas, Saiward Pharr, Jennifer Reid, Abby Whigham, and Amanda Wood.

New MTPC students are William Brinkley, Cecily Jackson, Tahmina Khanam, Xiangrong Liu, and Kathryn (Katie) Wilder.
New students enrolling in the PhD program are Thomas Blake, Amie Fletcher, Gerald Landers, Anna Oggs, Mary Ann Rygiel, Eva Shoop, and Maria (Vicki) Vitelli.
Meetings for English Center Consultants - Wednesday, August 18
New consultants for the English Center will meet today, August 18, at 3 p.m. All returning English Center consultants will join them for a meeting at 3:30 p.m. Meetings will be held in the English Center, Haley Center 3183.
Department Picnic - Saturday, August 21
The annual department picnic will be held at Chewacla State Park on Saturday, August 21, from 4 p.m. until dusk. All faculty, staff, students, and their family members are invited to attend. The event will be hosted by Dr. George and Carolyn Crandell. A map of Chewacla State Park can be found here.
Fall 2004 English Center Hours
The English Center
will open at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 23. Hours for the fall are: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. The English Center offers free tutoring sessions for students seeking help with critical reading and writing skills.
Online Graduate Studies Handbook Available
The Graduate Studies Handbook is now available online in PDF and web-friendly formats. The handbook has been published online to assist graduate students with any questions they may have. Feedback is encouraged so that the Graduate Studies Committee will be able to make the handbook as useful and convenient as possible.
Donald H. Cunningham Gives Presentation
Professor and Coordinator of the Technical and Professional Communication program, Donald H. Cunningham, gave a presentation on May 24, 2004 at the 2004 Local Technical Assistance Program, Region 4 (Southeastern United States) in Orange Beach, Alabama. His presentation was titled "Preparing and Delivering Effective Oral Presentations" and was attended by 40 technical and engineering personnel from 10 southeastern states.
Faculty Publish Book, Reviews, Fiction
Thomson/Wadsworth has published the 7th edition of How to Write for the World of Work, co-authored by Donald H. Cunningham, Elizabeth (Betsy) O. Smith, and Thomas E. Pearsall.
Kathryn Pratt has two forthcoming publications. Her review of Adriana Craciun's Fatal Women of Romanticism (Cambridge, 2003) will be published in Romantic Circles at the University of Maryland, and her review of Paul Youngquist's Monstrosities: Bodies and British Romanticism (Minnesota, 2003) will be published in South Atlantic Review.
Michael F. Smith has published two works of fiction. His short story "Anywhere" can currently be found online at The Summerset Review website, and "Dos Mujeres," a second short story, will be published in the fall issue of The Texas Review.
Prashant Natarajan Publishes Online Article
Second-year MTPC student Prashant Natarajan has published an article, "Designing Online Help for Pocket PCs," in the Society for Technical Communication Usability Special Interest Group's online newsletter. His article, originally posted in the April 2004 issue of the newsletter, was written for Dr. Betsy Smith's ENGL 6010: Document Design class in the fall of 2003.
Center for Diversity and Race Relations Presents Historic Photo Exhibit
Auburn University's Center for Diversity and Race Relations will present Dr. Michele Ronnick's historic photo exhibition in the Exhibit Lounge (room 217) in Foy Student Union. The exhibit will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting on August 17 and lasting until September 16. Ronnick features African-American classical scholars such as William Sanders Scarborough, Lewis Baxter Moore, John Wesley Gilbert, William Henry Crogman, and Edward Wilmot Blyden.
A public lecture will be given by Ronnick on Tuesday, August 31, at 7 p.m. in the Exhibit Lounge. A reception will follow.
Exhibition at Biggin Gallery
Cheonae Kim's exhibition, "turn and turn again," will be displayed in Biggin Gallery, 101 Biggin Hall, from August 18 to September 10. The artist will discuss her paintings and influences on Thursday, August 19, at 5:10 p.m. in the Jule Collins Smith Museum Auditorium. A reception at Biggin Gallery will follow the lecture from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
