Creative/Research Forum - "Meeting Resistance in the Classroom: Undergraduate Technical Communication Courses and Cognitive Development" - Today - January 19 - 12 pm in 3223 Haley Center
Julie Anne Zorn and Jessica M. Lueders will present at today's Creative/Research Forum. Their research is an expansion of an assignment from Dr. Isabelle Thompson's course, ENGL 7020: The Pedagogy of Technical and Professional Communication, and they presented their findings at the 2004 RMMLA Conference.
Investigating the effectiveness of the pedagogies directing TPC education within the academy, Zorn and Lueders have chosen to determine the achievement of educational goals in undergraduate TPC courses at Auburn University. Their results indicate that the instructors utilize an instrumental, skill-based pedagogical approach, which is in line with students’ expectations. However, they assert that rhetorical knowledge must be incorporated into these courses because it encourages intellectual development as students gain knowledge of all aspects of document creation rather than focus primarily on skill building.
MTPC Chili Dinner - Saturday - January 22 - 6 to 8 pm at Joyce Rothschild's Home
Joyce Rothschild will host a chili dinner at her home for MTPC faculty, students, and friends.
ABD Colloquium - "What on Earth Happened at MLA?" and "What Does the Spring Job Search Entail?" - Wednesday - January 26 - 12 pm in 8009 Haley Center
The ABD Colloquium invites you to join them in discussing "What on Earth Happened at MLA?" and "What Does the Spring Job Search Entail?" Feel free to bring your lunch and a friend for discussion about what attendees learned from going to MLA and how to use this information to help prepare for the next job search.
MTPC Oral Exam - Julie Anne Zorn - Thursday - February 3 - 3:30 pm in 3130 Haley Center
Second-year Master of Technical and Professional Communication (MTPC) student Julie Anne Zorn will present materials from her portfolio and coursework.
MTPC students fulfill their degree requirements by completing an oral exam and portfolio presentation. During the oral exam, students present many of the documents they have created in their MTPC classes and that appear in their portfolios. Students also incorporate information from their course readings and discussions into their presentations.
Members of the student's advisory committee conduct the oral exam. Department members and guests are invited to attend and ask questions.
