Upcoming Events for Spring Semester
2004
The 2004 spring semester begins on Monday, January 12, and classes
begin on Tuesday, January 13. The new semester brings with it a number
of events, including appearances by speakers for the English Symposium
Series. Anthony Hecht, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for The
Hard Hours in 1968 will read from his recent works on Thursday,
March 4. On Thursday, April 15, the Symposium Series will welcome Robyn
Wiegman, Director of Women's Studies at Duke University. In addition
to Wiegman's visit, April 15 is also slated for the Undergraduate Awards
Ceremony. The Graduate Student Reception will take place at
Pebble Hill on Tuesday, May 4. Graduation is scheduled
for Friday, May 14.

Dr. Bert Hitchcock Reappointed as Hargis Professor of English
The Department is pleased to congratulate Dr.
Bert Hitchcock on his reappointment as Hargis Professor of English.
Fall 2003 Issue of The Auburn Circle Now Available
The fall 2003 issue of the University's general interest magazine, The
Auburn Circle, is
now available. Kia Powell, Editor-in-Chief, and Julie Zorn, Fiction Editor
for The
Auburn Circle, are GTAs in the English
Department. Several students and faculty in English have their work in
the Circle.
Copies of The Auburn Circle can be found on the first, eighth, and ninth floors of Haley Center, in the English Center, the RBD Library, Foy Union, and other buildings on campus.
English Department End-of-Term Party -
Thursday, December 11 - 6:00 pm
After the success of last year's end-of-term party, the Department
has arranged for this year's party to take place at Pebble Hill on Thursday,
December 11 at 6:00 pm. There will be a potluck feast, and festive tunes
will be performed by musicians from the Department.
If you have not yet turned in your $3.00 per person contribution, please be sure to place your contribution in Diane Curtis' mailbox in 9030 Haley Center.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew (Pasolini, 1964)
This Italian adaptation, emphasizing realism and employing many
nonprofessional actors, is often praised for its charismatic, powerful
Christ and unusual adherence to the original text. The result is an emotional,
sometimes meditative presentation of Jesus as a revolutionary force in
the world.

Each spring semester, the English Department presents awards to its
graduate students. If you have an eligible conference presentation or

3130 Haley Center Opening Spring 2004
3130 Haley Center will be available Spring 2004 for class
meetings. The room will have 21 workstations with MS Office, Macromedia
Studio
(Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks), and Photoshop. The sign up sheet
is posted outside 8066 Haley Center.
If you find the time you want is not available, please send Betsy Smith an email identifying your needs.
