Phi Beta Kappa Initiates Four English Majors
Four English majors—Tressa Cook, Sarah Godwin, Wellon Lee, and Abby Whigham—have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Auburn University. They will be initiated at the annual Phi Beta Kappa banquet on April 28 at the Alumni Center.

This year Phi Beta Kappa faculty members elected a total of 19 students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics and 16 students in Liberal Arts for this top academic honor. At the same ceremony, Professor of English Emeritus Madison Jones will be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa as an honorary member.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation's oldest and most famous undergraduate honorary society, founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. Our department is well represented in the governance of Phi Beta Kappa: Joyce Rothschild is president and Drew Clark is secretary of the Auburn University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for 2003–04. Great Flicks - Tonight - 7:30 pm - 1203 Haley Center
Elizabeth
(Kapur, 1998)
This is not a Shakespearean adaptation, but a film that attempts to convey what Shakespeare’s world was like—without the winking and in-jokes of Shakespeare in Love. Dealing primarily with the early years of Elizabeth’s rule, the tensions of being a female ruler in a patriarchal society, and the various political maneuvers and plots that surrounded her, the movie by Indian director Shekhar Kapur views its subject from a compelling, postcolonial distance.

Tonight's film is the last one that will be shown this semester. Visit the English Channel this fall to view the Great Flicks schedule.
