Coursework

The PhD program requires a minimum of 60 semester credit hours beyond the BA, including a minimum of 10 hours of dissertation credit (ENGL 8990). The actual number of courses a student must take is set by his or her advisory committee. Students who already hold the MA in English usually need to take seven to nine more courses before their general doctoral examinations. Apart from ENGL 8990, there are no required courses or distribution requirements.

In planning coursework, doctoral students should work to develop broad knowledge of the discipline, together with a concentration on two or three specific areas within it. They should also aim to develop expertise in formulating, conducting, and communicating the results of a program of research.
