ENGL 5840/6840 Modern English Grammars
4:00-6:40 M
Robin Sabino
Students develop a working knowledge of major grammatical theories, including the traditional, structural, generative, variationist, and functional approaches as they apply to first and second language teaching.
The class begins by examining different types of grammar. We then consider the major figures and historical factors that shaped English grammars.
Projects will be in keeping with individual
student skills and interests as undergraduate or graduate students and will
reflect the grammatical topic(s) for the semester. In addition to a midterm,
students will demonstrate their understanding of the assigned reading by creating
an annotated bibliography of course readings. They will demonstrate their understanding
of the grammatical models we consider by designing a Web Page or Power Point
presentation that reflects grammatical principles for the "dash."
They will also write a critical review of an on-line English grammar for the
English Channel.
