World Literature Essay Awards Guidelines

The Auburn University World Literature program announces the creation of the annual World Literature Essay Awards, funded by the Department of English. The purpose of these awards is to promote understanding of global diversity by rewarding exceptional achievement in these Core Curriculum courses, in which students develop skills in cross-cultural interpretation.

First, second, and third place winners will be selected each spring from essays submitted in fulfillment of requirements of World Literature courses during the prior spring, summer, or fall terms and nominated by the course instructor. The selection committee will be appointed by the Coordinator of World Literature from World Literature faculty who have not nominated a student essay during the contest year. The author of the first place essay will receive $300; the author of the second place essay will receive $200; the author of the third place essay will receive $100. Pearson Longman, publisher of The Longman Anthology of World Literature, will provide an award of $100 to each of the instructors who nominate the award-winning essays.

World literature papers are normally interpretive essays, not involving extensive research, if any, and aimed at an audience of informed readers of the work in question. Winning essays will develop an imaginative and useful interpretation of a work or works, showing a clear awareness of the cultural contexts in which the works were written. The criteria of evaluation will be originality, incisiveness, usefulness, persuasiveness, and sensitivity to cultural difference.

Essays must be at least five full pages (12 point), completely and precisely documented, and carefully proofread to eliminate all problems of spelling, punctuation or grammar, and must consistently follow a standard form (MLA or Chicago) as specified by the instructor. Instructors may work with student authors to polish the papers before submission, but should not substantially alter the paper from the version submitted in class, for example by the addition of extensive research.

Submissions of nominated essays should include

  1. a cover sheet with the student’s name and complete contact information, the title of the essay, and the name of the nominating instructor with the semester and section number or time of the course for which the paper was written
  2. a letter from the student’s instructor indicating the assignment and the basis of evaluation
  3. the original paper submitted for the course with instructor’s comments
  4. five printed copies of the essay
  5. one electronic copy on a labeled 3.5” diskette in a recent version of MS Word or WordPerfect

Submissions for 2005 must be received by the Coordinator of World Literature (Department of English, 9030 Haley Center , Auburn University , AL 36849-5203 ) by Friday, 20 January 2006 . Address questions to Professor Alexander Dunlop at (334) 844-9068.
