Minutes of the Technical and professional communication Committee, September 29, 2004

Members Present: Don Cunningham, chair; Beth Fletcher, Keith Gibson, Chris Keirstead, Prashant Natarajan, Betsy Smith

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss assessment plans for Spring 2005. The last assessment for ENGL 3040 Technical Writing and ENGL 3080 Business Writing was done in Spring 2001 and reported in Fall 2001.

The committee plans to meet Wednesdays, October 13 and October 27 at 10 am in 9030D to work on assessment.

Don distributed and reviewed the contents of the following documents:

The mission and purpose statement for ENGL 3040 and ENGL 3080.
The course objectives for ENGL 3040 and ENGL 3080.
The fact sheet for ENGL 3080. (He will get the ENGL 3040 fact to committee members before the next meeting.)

University Assessment Report Forms B and C.
The complete Assessment Forms B and C for 2000-2001.
The worksheets used to assess the student work
The assessment results for Spring 2001.
The memo reporting the results.

Overall the review process worked well in 2001. Some refinements are needed. Collecting the student work electronically was problematic; filenaming conventions and opening the files created problems. Criteria need adjusting, particularly with the oral presentation outcome (if we decide to keep that outcome).

3. For the next meetings, we will review and revise the student outcomes, the criteria for evaluating the student work, and the ENGL 3040 and 3080 assignments. Our goal is to assess student work in Spring 2005.
