Symposium Committee
November 2, 2004

Present: M. Clark, C. Forhan, C. Keirstead, R. Joines, B. Smith. Absent: J. Kwist

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Betsy Smith reported on Barbara Mowat’s lecture. She noted that approximately 75 people including twenty faculty members and ten graduate students attended the event.

Betsy also reported that Wendell Berry has declined our invitation for spring. Alex Dunlop is trying to get Chinua Achebe to speak to World Literature faculty and students.

The committee agreed to return to the original list of nominees for the spring and fall Symposium talks. After some discussion of these potential speakers, it was agreed that Jahan Ramazani and Michael Hofmann would be invited to talk this spring and that James Phelan would be invited for fall. Chris Forhan agreed to contact Ramazani. Rick Raines will ask Michael Hofmann. Miriam Clark will be in contact with Jim Phelan.

The committee agreed to contribute $250 to the Women’s Studies Program to help support a visit by Gladys-Marie Fry's visit in May.

Respectfully submitted,

Miriam Marty Clark
