Minutes of the Symposium Committee MeetingFebruary 18, 2004
Present: Alicia Carroll, Bert Hitchcock, Penny Ingram, Betsy Smith, Shea Stuart, James Truman
Recorder: Alicia Carroll
Minutes of last meeting were approved.
Discussion began with an update on current events. Anthony Hecht arrives on March 2nd. On Wednesday March 3rd at 1:00 there will be a tea for him in Foy Union. He will appear on a panel at 7:00. On Thursday from 9-10:30 or so he will be in the department for a meet and greet. He may attend Chris Forhan’s class at 2:00. At 4:30 he will give a poetry reading at the museum.
Discussion moved on to next year. A budget of $6500 is firm though it may be augmented by funds from other sources. All of the speakers recommended were considered and it was decided that we would seek James Buzard as a fall speaker and seek Donna Tartt in the spring. If Donna Tartt cannot be persuaded or afforded, it was decided that Pat DeVoto would be second choice. Thematic links were discussed and it was thought that we might consider having one at some point.
The next meeting of the committee should take
place informally, at the Hecht event.
