Committee meeting
2 p.m., 21 April 2004
members present: Alicia Carroll, Bert Hitchcock (minutes-taker du jour),
Betsy Smith
(chair), Shea Stuart
From the Chair’s report and committee discussion:
Robyn Wiegman’s recent visit and final 2003-04 Symposium event went quite well in all respects. All of the speaker programs for this year can, in fact, be considered successful.
Next year’s lineup includes
confirmed for the fall (two scholars):
James Buzard (MIT) for Thursday, 23 September (Alicia Carroll and Chris
Keirstead to be the chief faculty contacts and arrangers; public lecture
will not be on the topic of travel literature, but other smaller-group
discussions can be; the cost to be approximately $2600 in Department
funds; should be able to find supplementary sources)
Barbara Mowat (Folger Shakespeare Library) for Thursday, 21 October (topic will be Shakespeare; Department activities to be combined with Phi Beta Kappa event; for approximate cost of $2100 in Department funds; should be able to find supplementary sources)
prospects for the spring (two creative
writers):
letter of invitation has been sent to Anne Rivers Siddons
letter of invitation will be sent to Pat Devoto (a Gee’s Bend
connection here)
If appearances by these individuals do not work out, Tom Franklin, Michael
Knight, and Phyllis Alesia Perry are other possibilities.
Because it has generally worked well
this year, we will stay with holding events at the Art Museum for the
coming year.
