Composition

ENGL 1100 and ENGL 1120 are sequential composition courses that focus on improving students' reading, writing, and thinking abilities. ENGL 1100 provides a foundation by focusing on developing a writing process and learning sound approaches to reading and writing within the academic community. ENGL 1120 builds on that foundation while stressing argumentative writing, research, and documentation.

Both courses are based on the assumptions that: 1) writing and reading are ways of thinking; 2) writing and reading are interrelated in any learning process; 3) students need introduction to and practice in reading, writing, and thinking within the academy; and 4) writing well is a necessary skill for functioning in a literate community outside the academy.
