Phillip Beard has an MA from the University of Virginia
and a PhD from the University of Maryland. He specializes in American
modernism and its relationship to romanticism; his dissertation is "F.
Scott Fitzterald's Nostalgia and the Twilight of the American Sublime."
He has recently written an essay about the American philosopher George
Santayana which analyzes transcendentalist, romantic elements in this
proto-modernist figure. In the academic year 2003-2004 Beard taught
American Literature as a Fulbright Scholar at Friedrich Alexander University
in Erlangen, Germany.
