English Majors Receive College of
Liberal Arts Scholarships
Two undergraduate English majors, Bonnie Jean Shamp and Caroline Wilkinson, were awarded College of Liberal Arts scholarships in September 2004. The Department congratulates these two for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Bonnie Jean Shamp, sophomore, graduated from Auburn High School and enjoys studying English because for her, "to study English is to study the important questions of life: how to live, how to love, how to embrace the human condition in its folly and frailty while ever searching for the divine."
Caroline Wilkinson, also a sophomore and Auburn High School graduate, will receive a minor in History. She is involved in Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, College of Democrats, and Alpha Delta Pi. Caroline would like to go to graduate school and become a professor or writer.
The College of Liberal Arts Annual Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament funded the awards. The English Department this year was represented by George Crandell, Betsy Smith, Tim Dykstal, and Keith Gibson.
Barbara Mowat, Alum and Former Faculty Member, Presents Lecture
Alum Barbara Mowat (BS, PhD), Director of Academic Programs at the Folger Shakespeare Library spoke on Thursday, October 21 at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Mowat's talk was entitled "Shakespeare's Reading/Reading Shakespeare." Mowat was also initiated into Phi Beta Kappa as a distinguished alum. She also met in informal gatherings of students and faculty throughout the day in the Department of English.
Her lecture was a part of the Department of English Symposium Series for 2004-2005 and was co-sponsored by the Department of History, Phi Beta Kappa, the College of Liberal Arts, the Herzfeld Lecture Fund, and the Auburn University Lectures Committee.
Dr. Mowat earned both a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a doctorate in English from Auburn University and served as an English Department faculty member and editor of the Southern Humanities Review. She was also a founding member of the Ascent of Man program, now called the Human Odyssey.
