Forms for
inviting a J Exchange Visitor
Instructions and
procedures are within the following documents:
Professor
Research Scholar
Short-Term Scholar
Student Non-Degree
Specialist
J-1 Student Degree Seeking
- Plans to invite a J-1 scholar
should begin three to four months in advance of the
start date of the appointment to allow
for document preparation, mailing immigration
documents, and visa processing. In some cases,
scholar may experience significant delays in visa
processing due to increased U.S. government security
requirements. It takes approximately 15-30
days to complete the DS-2019 forms depending on the
time of year and processing priority workloads.
- In the event that a scholar is delayed, and
unable to enter the US and begin the program by the
start date assigned on the DS-2019, the faculty
sponsor is obligated to notify OIE in order that
appropriate changes can be made in the SEVIS data
base. To not do so is to risk substantial problems
for the scholar due to the inconsistency of the
information provided to the immigration authorities
- Effective November 17, 2006 US
DOS amended the US Exchange Visitor regulations for Research
Scholar and Professor categories to add a 5 year maximum/2 year
repeated use bar. This applies to J EV's in these
categories who are present in the US as of 11/27/2006
and new arrivals.
