I was fortunate to spend the summer after my sophomore year studying in Salzburg, Austria. The trip was an incredible experience that truly opened my eyes and changed my perspective of the world around me. I chose to study in Austria because of the beauty of the area, its incredible history, and my interest in learning the German language. My six weeks in Salzburg was more than I could have hoped for. I lived with one American roommate and an Austrian family. My host family’s home was within walking distance from the center of town and Salzburg College, where I took my courses. My college was small and consisted of only about 50 American students. We all spent a great deal of time together, and I made friends who I still stay in touch with today.
I spent a few hours of each
weekday in class or studying and had the rest of the day to tour Salzburg, hike,
or take day trips to visit nearby cities. We were also given free weekends, during which I traveled with my new friends to Munich and London. Another weekend, the college took us all to Vienna for three nights. Since Salzburg is a small city with a population of about 100,000, it was a great opportunity to spend the weekends seeing what these large European cities had to offer.
Overall, studying abroad was an incomparable and invaluable experience. In my opinion, spending time abroad is the best way to learn another language and develop a better understanding and appreciation for other cultures. I would recommend it to anyone!
