This past summer of 2006, I studied
abroad in Salamanca, Spain,
during the month of July. The food, culture and rich
history of this country was unlike anything I had ever
seen. When my friends and I were not in class, we would
go a nd explore the town by foot. Our favorite thing to
do during the day was to go shopping and make daily
stops at the fruteria. We would buy fresh peaches,
kiwis, and grapes at ridiculously low prices from a man
who radiated with enthusiasm. At night
we would sit in the Plaza Mayor and quietly observe
the local culture that surrounded us. On the weekends
we tra veled
to some
different towns where we saw some
incredible churches and amazing landmarks such as
Ferdinand and Isabella’s castle! We also had the
opportunity to visit Portugal and Paris, which were
exquisite in their own way. We visited a beach in
Portugal toward the end of our trip. It was so nice to
see the ocean and experience the Portuguese culture. We
spent our last three days in Paris which I also loved.
The food was amazing (even the escargot!). For me,
studying abroad was a life-changing experience and I
would highly recommend it to anyone!
