Six Doctor of Audiology students along with Clinical Professor Sandra Clark-Lewis traveled to Guatemala from August 8-15, 2009 on invitation from the Municipality of Guatemala City. While in Guatemala they provided hearing screening to 450 children who are at risk of becoming “children of the street” and attending schools where they receive not only an education but also two meals each day. During the hearing screening, twenty children were identified with educationally significant hearing loss and hearing aids provided by the GN ReSound Corporation were delivered to the children. In addition the schools were given an audiometer and school personnel were trained to administer hearing screening tests. Dr. Clark-Lewis, who is in the Department of Communication Disorders, will return to Guatemala in May 2010 with her colleague, Dr. Larry Molt, 4 audiology doctoral students and a senior undergraduate student with a double major in Spanish and Journalism (who will assist with translating). During this trip students will test the hearing of 170 children who have failed the hearing screening provided by school personnel and also test 100 new students enrolled in these schools. In addition students will check and program the hearing aids that were delivered in August and deliver additional hearing aids to children identified with hearing loss.
