Selecting a Program
|
These four areas, all important, should be
considered when selecting a study abroad program. More
considerations and criteria can be found in the
Student’s Guide to Education Abroad.
However, these questions do not replace the advice and support
you will get in consultation with study abroad advisors,
academic advisors, parents, program coordinators, and students
who have participated in the program(s) you are considering. Be
certain you understand the policies at your home institution
relating to studying abroad and transfer credit, and gain the
permission required to study abroad.
1.
Location
Where
should you study?
- Do you
prefer living in a warmer or cooler climate?
- On the
coast or inland?
- In an
English-speaking country or a non-English speaking country?
- Do
research on your country of choice. Are you prepared to
adjust to living in this country and adapting to this
culture
Should
you live in a small town or a large city?
- Everyone is different; some people prefer a booming
metropolis, others rolling hills and country side.
- Consider the popularity of this destination for study abroad
or tourism. Will you be the only U.S. student there, or one
of many?
2.
Dates/Time
- How
long should you stay?
- What
year or semester of stay is best for study abroad?
- Do the
start/end dates conflict with your home intuition’s?
3. Cost
- What are the costs
of a study abroad program?
- Are short-term or
summer programs less expensive?
- When will the study
abroad program fees be due?
- Do you plan to use
federal, state, and / or institutional financial aid for study
abroad
- Do you need to
work while abroad?
4. Courses and Credit
- Do you want to
take courses in your major or minor while abroad? Do you want to
earn academic credit?
- Are you interested
in an internship or practicum experience abroad?
- How many hours do
you need to take based on guidelines given by your academic
program or your student financial aid office?
- Do you understand
the details of credit transfer?
Chosen a program? Great.
